Grasstrees
1007.Grasstrees

The Grasstree (Xanthorrhoea preissii) is very much part of the West Australian landscape and uniquely Australian. They fascinated the first European settlers, since they were unlike any other known plant. In fact, they are a living fossil developed early in the evolutionary stakes for flowering plants . Although the grass tree has been of immense value to the aborigines and colonists, its future lies in the hands of the landowners and nature reserve managers, who are blessed with the woodland remnants which support the remaining populations. It is a true icon of the Aussie bush and as such, provides a unique identity to our Australian landscape.

CALIFORNIA DESERT - 2009
1011.CALIFORNIA DESERT - 2009
A favorite annual activity is our visit to the desert, usually in February or March.  This year we took a house for March at the Woodhaven Country Club in Palm Desert, CA.  From there we visited Palm Springs, La Quinta, Indio, and all the towns in the Coachella Valley.

This year we had a lovely house on the  7th fairway, a long par 5, and from our patio we enjoyed watching the passing parade of golfers, birds, and the background of mountains and changing colors of the sky.

Almost all of these photos were taken from the patio or our car, as I was recovering from a back injury which limited my mobility.  My intent was to capture the warmth and color of the winter desert, and share the special kind of beauty and charm that gives the valley its reputation as a winter resort destination.

Kwinana Grain Terminal
1012.Kwinana Grain Terminal

The Kwinana Grain Terminal is Western Australia's primary grain export facility, shipping more than half of the state's export grain and with a total storage capacity of more than one million tonnes.  Enjoy the beautiful views from the top of this landmark building and visit the Granary Museum to see the evolution of modern grain handling methods used by Co-operative Bulk Handling. Complete the tour with a visit to Kwinana Beach where the wreck of the 'SS Kwinana' has been cut-down and filled to form a jetty and see the mosaic representation of a Noongar Fish Trap in adjoining Wells Park, Kwinana.

Boab
1013.Boab

The Boab Tree (Adansonia gregorii) is easily recognised by the swollen base of its trunk which gives the tree a bottle-like appearance. Endemic to Australia, this Boab occurs in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and east into the Northern Terriitory. It is the only boabab to occur in Australia. The Australian Aboriginal Legend of the Boab Tree:--  "When The Tree God created the Boab Tree it was to be the most beautiful of all trees in the universe, with the most beautiful flowers and bearing the juiciest fruit. But as the tree grew to maturity its flowers were mediocre and its fruit had a bad odour and tasted vile. The Tree God became so angry that he yanked the Boab out of the ground and slammed it back in the earth upside down and that is why today, when you see a Boab tree, it looks as if its roots are growing up in the air."

THE BOLSA CHICA WETLANDS
1017.THE BOLSA CHICA WETLANDS
The Bolsa Chica wetlands in Huntington Beach, CA offers ever changing views, varying by weather, the tide, time of year, and presence of many species of birds.

These photos were taken late afternoon on February 19, 2009, two days after a winter storm, which typically is the only time one can see from the beach to the mountains of the Angeles National Forest on the left, and the San Bernardino National Forest on the right, some 60+ miles distance.  On the left is Mount San Antonio and to the right are the mountains around Big Bear Lake.
