GPS Introduction (Saturday, February 17, 2007)| 23 students attended the Introduction to GPS. After students received basic instruction, they entered in the waypoints for five hidden caches, and, working in teams of two, they were off. Aftewards, students logged the waypoints into http://boulter.com/gps/ and compared where they were on the ground with the map imagery. |

Pattonville (summer 2005)Pattonville after the Termination of the Garrison.
The former DoD housing area Pattonville was incorporated into the townships of Remseck and Kornwestheim in 1993. (Overall withdrawal from the larger Stuttgart area in the mid 90ties: ca 10.000 members of the military forces or dependent persons. Remaining total ca 4.000.) - Best available figures. |

Robinson Barracks (summer 2005)The nucleus for post War DoD housing areas were usually former Wehrmacht installations. (Adaptive reuses, sort of.) Flandernkaserne in the present case. The hillside location is probably accidental. Unclaimed lowland sites just rare. The river arms very much filled out by the sprawling conurban octopus. Some newer housing projects (including the Bauhaus-Weissenhofsiedlung and the SI Hotel) occupy similar 'watchtower' hilltops. Scenic backdrop hardly a drawback.
[Some cities were build form the hilltops downwards, others, like Stuttgart, apparently from the riverbanks upwards. As an aside, downtown Stuttgart had for centuries the reputation of being inundation prone. All those runoff waters from the surrounding vineyards. The very minor, arroyo type Neckar contributory is at present completely covered over. - With some licence: The subway tubes will be flooded but rarely. One reported instance. Appropriate safety gear is nevertheless recommended. Nobody will mind.] |
