541.Bagan, MyanmarBagan - Myanmar's premiere archeological destination - streams out over 25 square miles and contains an astonishing array of more than 2,000 temples.
Not as well known as Cambodia's Angkor Wat but every bit as impressive. There is nothing like surveying the Bagan plain at twilight. Nothing. The sun's final rays plant chiaroscurist kisses on all the temples within its reach. Beautiful and calming.
The Myanmar government unfortunately is in the process of renovating - not restoring - many of the temples at Bagan. The result is a Disneyfication (pretty, but characterless) of these historic gems. Go before more irreparable damage is done.
