Alpacas and Indians (21 April 2010)Join me for a day’s outing to visit the Rivermist Alpaca Farm near Toodyay. See the Alpacas being hand fed before traveling on to Clackline where we enjoyed a delicious lunch at AvonBrook Wines and Lone Wolf Gift Shop which specializes in American Indian memorabilia. |

Queen Mary 2 (14 March 2010)| History was made on Sunday 14 March 2010 when the majestic passenger liner Queen Mary 2 sailed into Fremantle Harbour. Spectators watched entranced as the skipper turned the 345 m-long vessel in a 420 m-wide mooring area at the Passenger Terminal. Reaching 62 metres above the water line, the 345 m-long Queen Mary 2 can carry up to 2620 guests and 1253 crew. Tens of thousands turned out to line Fremantle Harbour and wave farewell as she steamed away about 5:30 pm on her third world voyage. Another attraction of the day was the Sail Training Tall Ship Leeuwin II, a 3 masted barquentine, 1850’s style rig. Construction: Steel hull, teak deck. Dimensions: Overall Length 55 m, Length on deck 40 m, Beam 9 m, Draught depth 3.4 m, Height of main mast 33 m. Displacement: 344 tones. Sails: 16 sails overall, over 810 sq m. Accommodation: 15 crew, 40 trainees. Built at Henderson, Western Australia. Enjoy my photos from a day out at Fremantle. |

CALIFORNIA DESERT - 2010 (April 2010)We spent the month of April in Palm Desert this year, where we rented a lovely home of the golf course at Woodhaven Country Club. A highlight of our visit in 2010 was a day trip to the Joshua Tree National Park in the high desert. The park album is listed on my home page.
This album contains images of areas in and around Palm Desert in the Coachella Valley, which I describe as a giant oasis of resort areas surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains, Mt. San Jacinto, the Shadow Mountains, and Mt. San Gorgonio.
The last three images are wide angle shots which require the use of scroll bars to see the entire image. To see the full image on the screen, at the bottom of the enlargement, click on large size for viewing.

University (April 2007)The University of Western Australia was established in 1911 on the 65-hectare Crawley campus and is widely acclaimed for its grounds and buildings, which are listed in the register of Australian National Estate. There are more than 200 species of plants and trees which enhance the tranquillity and beauty of the grounds, and support more than 55 species of birds. Unfortunately, many of the north-facing stained glass windows on this Heritage Listed Building were damaged by large hailstones during the severe storm on 22 March 2010. Nine extra photos have been added showing some of the damage. |

JOSHUA TREE PARK (12 April 2010)Why did we wait so long to come here? That's the question Lea and I asked ourselves once we entered the park at the Joshua Tree, CA entrance. The park is huge, with other entrances at 29 Palms, CA, home to the large Marine Corps Base where I spent many days training in desert warfare, and one other entrance off the I-10 east of Indio, CA.
In the high desert, the western part of the park is above 3000 feet, while the eastern part drops below 3000 feet. Our visit took in a very small section, from the entrance to Hidden Valley. We plan to return several more times.
The rocks, their sizes, shapes, and formations are dramatic and powerful. All I can tell you is that the rock piles began underground eons ago. I took lots of photos in the attempt to describe them.
