3/1 MARINES CAR WASH - 15 AUGUST 2009 (15 August 2009)On Saturday, 15 August 2009, a perfect summer day in Huntington Beach, Marines of 3/1 (3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division) with the assistance of the Huntington Beach adoption committee (3/1 Marines Foundation) came to town to conduct a successful car wash, raising funds to make the battalion's 2009 Birthday Ball more affordable for young Marines & Sailors.
The Huntington Beach community adopted the battalion in 2005, and since then has supported the battalion in a number of ways, including fund raising events to support Marines/Sailors of the unit, and their families, especially while the battalion is deployed.
The citizens of Huntington Beach and the surrounding area turned out in abundance to generously support the fund raiser by donating money for car washes, purchase of bake sales items, and food from the grill manned by the Huntington Beach Fire Dept.
This was truly a community event with outstanding support coming from: Bella Terra, Simple Green, Huntington Beach Firefighters Association, Huntington Beach Public Works, Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa, Poseidon Resources, Rainbow Disposal, Beef Palace, Huntington Beach Municipal Employees Association, Huntington Beach Police Department, DJ Ray, Huntington Beach Kiwanis Club, and HB Digital Arts, all of whom donated very generously to this event.
Those interested in participating further in support of 3/1 should contact Cindy Cross, Executive Director of the 3/1 Foundation, at 714 375-3131, or by email: HB4Marines@aol.com

Katie and Steve's Banquet (June 2009)| Commander Steve and President Katie's banquet was nice. The food was great, the cake was awesome, and everyone enjoyed the fellowship. The sing-a-long was fun too. The only bad thing in the day was traffic delays. |

CHANGE OF COMMAND - 5TH MARINES (14 July 2009)Change of Command - 5th Marines (5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division). On 3 June 2009 in a Change of Command ceremony at Camp San Mateo, located on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base, Colonel Patrick J. Malay relinquished command of the much decorated 5th Marines to Colonel Willard A. Buhl.
The activation of the Fifth Marines dates back to June 1917, just prior to the U.S. force deployment to France during World War I. The Regiment won its nickname, the “Fighting Fifth,” on the battlefields of western Europe. So fierce were its efforts in the Battle of Belleau Wood and subsequent victories that the French government awarded the Regiment the Croix de Guerre with two palms and one gilt star. Today, each Marine serving in the Regiment also wears the Fourragere, a French unit award, on the left shoulder of his uniform to recognize the legacy and valor of their predecessors.
These images are presented in the order of events of the day, beginning with the gathering of guests, serenade by the Marine Corps Band San Diego (established 1921), the Change of Command, Pass in Review, and concluding with informal greetings and congratulations among families and guests, followed by a reception across from Regimental Headquarters.
Also supporting the ceremony was The Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard from Barstow, California,
Image #22 describes the sequence of events.
The passing of the Regiment's battle colors, delivered by Regimental Sergeant Major Robert D. Thielen to the outgoing Commanding Officer, and in turn presented to the new Commander, symbolizes the formal transfer of command.
