 | 1157.CHANGE OF COMMAND - 5TH MARINESChange of Command - 5th Marines (5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division). On 3 June 2009 in a Change of Command ceremony at Camp San Mateo, located on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base, Colonel Patrick J. Malay relinquished command of the much decorated 5th Marines to Colonel Willard A. Buhl.
The activation of the Fifth Marines dates back to June 1917, just prior to the U.S. force deployment to France during World War I. The Regiment won its nickname, the “Fighting Fifth,” on the battlefields of western Europe. So fierce were its efforts in the Battle of Belleau Wood and subsequent victories that the French government awarded the Regiment the Croix de Guerre with two palms and one gilt star. Today, each Marine serving in the Regiment also wears the Fourragere, a French unit award, on the left shoulder of his uniform to recognize the legacy and valor of their predecessors.
These images are presented in the order of events of the day, beginning with the gathering of guests, serenade by the Marine Corps Band San Diego (established 1921), the Change of Command, Pass in Review, and concluding with informal greetings and congratulations among families and guests, followed by a reception across from Regimental Headquarters.
Also supporting the ceremony was The Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard from Barstow, California,
Image #22 describes the sequence of events.
The passing of the Regiment's battle colors, delivered by Regimental Sergeant Major Robert D. Thielen to the outgoing Commanding Officer, and in turn presented to the new Commander, symbolizes the formal transfer of command.

 | 1160.1ST MARINE DIVISION - CHANGE OF COMMANDOn 1 July 2009, in a Change of Command ceremony the oldest and most decorated division in the Marine Corps, the 1st Marine Division welcomed a new Commanding General, Major General Richard P. Mills, and said farewell to the departing Commander, Major General Thomas D. Waldhauser, who has been transferred to Headquarters, U. S. Marine Corps, in Washington, D.C. and has been selected for promotion to Lieutenant General, USMC.
The ceremony took place at Camp Pendleton, on the deck in front of the Division’s Headquarters, a building which has served as headquarters for every division commander since 1942.
The 1st Marine Division was activated aboard the USS Texas on February 1, 1941 and in 1942 landed on the island of Guadalcanal, part of the Solomon Islands. Since then, the Division has engaged in major campaigns throughout World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The Division’s regiments were in existence as early as March 8, 1911, when the 1st Marine Regiment was formed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The 5th Marines were created in Vera Cruz, Mexico on July 13, 1914 and participated in 15 major engagements during World War I, including Belleau Wood, Chateau Thierry, and St. Mihiel. On August 7, 1917, the 7th Marines were activated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and spent the duration of World War I in Cuba and were disbanded after the war. The 11th Marines was formed in January 1918 at Quantico, Virginia, as a light infantry regiment. The Regiment went to France as an infantry unit, providing a machine gun company and a guard company. Decommissioned and reactivated twice between the world wars, the Regiment was re-formed in 1940 as a full-fledged artillery unit.
These photographs are presented in the order of the events of the day, beginning with images of the headquarters area, gathering of guests prior to the ceremony, followed by the formal ceremony, beginning with a concert by the 1st Marine Division Band. The sequence of events is described in image #16.

 | 1162.NEWPORT BEACH CAR WASH 1/1 MARINES-2009Approximately one month before the return of 1/1 (1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division) from their deployment with the 13th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) Marines of the RBE (Remain Behind Element) returned to Newport Beach for another successful car wash, raising funds to make the battalion's 2009 Birthday Ball more affordable for young Marines & Sailors. The next 1/1 car wash in Newport Beach will be held on 18 July at the same location on Pacific Coast Highway, just south of the Newport Boulevard overpass.
Gunnery Sergeant Holmes of 1/1 was NCO in charge, with additional support from HQ 1st Marine Regiment who provided up-armored Humvees, and Staff Sergeant Christopher Colson and Sgt Sergio Pineda from San Diego who brought one of their recruiting Humvees in a huge 18 wheeler, both bright red with recently updated USMC graphics, for display.
A's Market, near the sight, kindly donated coffee and breakfast sandwiches for approximately seventy 1/1 Marines and Sailors during set up.
Although weather was marginal with a slight drizzle all day, the citizens of Newport Beach again turned out in abundance for car washes and to also generously purchase food and various Marine Corps memorabilia, assuring yet another successful fund raiser for the community's adopted battalion.

 | 1165.Bon Scott TributeRonald Belford (Bon) Scott was born at Kirriemuir, Scotland, on 9th July 1946. The Scott family migrated to Australia 1952 and they settled in Fremantle in 1956 where Bon attended North Fremantle Primary School and later John Curtin High School. His passion for music intensified during his teenage association with ‘The Caledonian Scots Pipe Band’ of Fremantle who awarded him ‘Novice Champion for Drumming’ four years running. Bon dreamt of being a ‘Rock n Roll Star’ and began living his dream with voracious passion. He first performed with “The Spektors’ 1965, ‘The Valentines’ 1966-70 and ‘Fraternity’ 1970-73 before joining ‘AC/DC’ in 1974 with whom he proceeded to shake the foundations of Rock n Roll music through his writing and performance of what have become recognised by millions of fans around the world as the greatest Rock n Roll anthems ever written including; ‘It’s a Long Way To The Top’, ‘TNT’, ‘High Voltage’, ‘Jailbreak’, ‘Let There Be Rock’, and ‘Highway To Hell’. The tragic and untimely death of Bon Scott on the 19th February 1980, in London UK, left us with an enduring musical legacy that continues to inspire the Rock n Roll spirit in successive generations. In September 2005 the National Trust of Australia listed the Bon Scott Grave Site as a “Heritage and Cultural Icon”. This is the first contemporary icon to be added to a list traditionally reserved for buildings and homes. In July 2006, to mark what would have been Bon Scott’s 60th Birthday, the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board completed refurbishments on the Bon Scott Grave Area. This consisted of a Bon Scott Arch and Memorial Entrance gate and a new rustic looking black concrete footpath with stainless steel symbols embedded at both ends of the 50 m walkway. The actual gravestone was not disturbed and has remained in its original position since 1980. In 2008 a life-size bronze statue of Bon Scott was unveiled overlooking the Fisherman’s Wharf in Fremantle. This album contains a few images of the Bon Scott Tribute Sculpture and the Bon Scott Grave Area. A ‘Rock n Roll Legend’ whose star continues to rise. | |
