St. Mark's Wildlife Refuge (July 3, 2005)I spent a lovely long 4th of July weekend in Tallahassee. Hiked a few miles and took about 500 photos. Here's a taste of St. Mark's (before Hurricane Dennis swamped it with a 12' storm surge a few days later). It was a very hot day and we only did two relatively short (2 mile or less) trails. This is one area I could happily explore every inch of and can't wait to go back.
From the website: This unique refuge was established in 1931 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds. It is one of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. It encompasses 68,000 acres spread out between Wakulla, Jefferson, and Taylor counties along the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida. The refuge includes coastal marshes, islands, tidal creeks and estuaries of seven north Florida rivers, and is home to a diverse community of plant and animal life. The refuge also has strong ties to a rich cultural past, and is home to the St. Marks Lighthouse, which was built in 1832 and is still in use today. |

Sunrise on Ft. DeSoto (July 16, 2005)Arrived at North Beach, Ft. DeSoto (named The Number One Beach in America) 6:30 a.m. and shot continuously for five straight hours. It was a 10+ day for beauty and for photo ops, although I didn't think so when I first got there and got past the glorious sunrise.
Come take a walk on this beautiful beach, then a trail in the woods on a stupendous July day in Tampa Bay, FL. |

Hurricane Dennis (July 9th and 10th)| He (thankfully) passed us on his way northward by about 200 miles. Where I live in Palmetto it was just a miserably rainy sometimes gusty weekend. On Anna Maria Island, 10 miles west, it was a different story altogether. Definitely tropical storm conditions there. Here are some shots from Saturday and Sunday with Sunday's shots first. Photos 1-6 were taken on the Gulf side of the island. 7-10 on the Intercoastal side. 11-15 were taken on the island when we went down so Kevin could secure his friend's boat. Those shots are from his yard. The rest? I was just bored. |
