Dusty (aka Bentley) (Roanoke, VA)Bentley is a 6-year lovable, (c)hunk of a boy that was surrendered after his owner could no longer care for him. His foster mom thought he would like a new name, Dusty. But it turns out he prefers his original name. No matter his name, this affectionate 26-pound rat terrier mix is ready to be your best pal! Bentley’s favorite activities include going for walks, getting pets and belly rubs and relaxing indoors.
Bentley walks nicely on a leash, staying to the side and keeping pace well, occasionally wanting to stop for a sniff. He also walks on double leash with his 9-pound foster sister. It is best if his adventures are close to home as he is prone to car sickness. When his foster mom works in the yard, he prefers to stay inside or supervise from the porch, no digging holes or gate dashing from this boy! He knows a few basic commands, sit, down and stay and could easily learn more since he is eager to please and food motivated. Indoors, Bentley is crate/house trained and awaits patiently in the room next door for his meals to be prepared. He enjoys a comfy dog bed or even the couch if you will allow it. At night, Bentley prefers to sleep in bed with his humans but will be content in a dog bed next to you, if request it of him.
Bentley enjoys a calm household environment, no playful canines or children please! Even better, he would be happy to be the only dog and your devoted companion! Bentley is not interested in dog toys or chewing on household items but he does have an affinity for play-attacking blankets and would need to have a few blankets made available to him for that use. When Bentley was surrendered to a local shelter it was noted that he does not like men. However, Bentley has been friendly and affectionate to several men since being surrendered. However, out on walks, Bentley will offer a warning growl to men he passes. If there are men in the adoptive home, they would need to meet Bentley in a neutral location during the adoption process to ensure Bentley will accept them. In his adoptive home, the house rules should be strictly enforced for the first few months to keep his eagerness in check. But because Bentley is eager to please, he responds well to correction and a firm “no”.
