1/1 MARINES DEPLOY 2012
768.1/1 MARINES DEPLOY 2012
On a beautiful June morning, 2012, the first element of Marines and Sailors of 1/1 (1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division) assembled on the Battalion parade deck for their 7th deployment since Operation Iraqi Freedom.

It is difficult to describe the mood and emotions of a deployment day, but perhaps these images will convey, better than words, what yet another long separation means to families, friends, and the Marines and Sailors of 1/1.

On the positive side, members of the battalion are optimistic and ready, for they are well trained and prepared, parents and wives accept the necessary parting with grace and courage, and the young children, likely without knowing why, appear to understand that this is no ordinary day.

1ST MARINES - CHANGE OF COMMAND 2012
774.1ST MARINES - CHANGE OF COMMAND 2012
Change of Command - 1st Marines (1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division).  On 8 June 2012 in a Change of Command ceremony, Colonel David J. Furness relinquished command of the famed 1st Marines to Colonel Peter B. Baumgarten.

Colonel Furness assumed command of the 1st Marines on 4 June 2010, and leaves the Regiment for assignment as Commanding Officer of Expeditionary Warfare School, Quantico, Virginia.

These images are presented in the order of events of the day, beginning with the gathering of guests, serenade by the 1st Marine Division Band, arrival of the Marine marching units, invocation, the Change of Command, Pass in Review, and concluding with informal greetings and congratulations among families and guests.  Image #2 describes the sequence of events.

The passing of the regimental colors, delivered by Regimental Sergeant Major James F. Cully to the outgoing Commanding Officer, and in turn presented to the new Commander, symbolizes the formal transfer of command.

Following the passing of colors, there were remarks by Major General Ronald L. Bailey spoke, Commanding General, 1st Marine Division, Colonel Furness, and Colonel Baumgarten.

The ceremony was also attended by Major General Melvin Spiese, Deputy CG I MEF, and Sergeant Major Mike Kufchak, SgtMaj of the 1st Marine Division.
