 | 1236.1/1 MARINES - JANUARY 2009In the early part of January, Marines and Sailors of 1/1 (1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division) assembled on the Battalion parade deck to prepare for their 5th deployment since Operation Iraqi Freedom.
1/1 will be the BLT (Battalion Landing Team) of the 13th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit).
On a beautiful California day, the mood was quiet, yet tense with high spirits and readiness, damped by the necessity of saying farewell to family and friends, but that is the business of Marines.
If the purpose of this album is served, it will be to communicate some feeling of the rush of emotions as each Marine and Sailor, and each loved one, finds their own way to accept another separation, with grace and optimism.

 | 1238.CHANGE OF COMMAND - 1ST BN, 4TH MARINES

Change of Command ceremony is usually an event of high and mixed emotions. The departing commander regrets leaving the camaraderie carved out during many months of intensive training and combat operations. while the new commander enjoys the recognition, honor, and privilege of being entrusted with the command of a Marine Infantry Battalnion.
On this day, 1/4 (1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division), honors the departing and welcomes the new commander.
The motto of 1/4 is: "WHATEVER IT TAKES"
These images are in the order of the ceremony, beginning with the empty parade ground, informal visits as the guests arrive, and concluding with a few posed shots at the reception. The first image is a copy of the program listing the sequence of events.
