 | 1201.3/1 MARINES KIDS CHRISTMAS PARTY - 2008Since the citizens of Huntington Beach, CA adopted 3/1 (3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division), the battalion has been deployed 3 times.
As Christmas 2008 approached, with Marine & Sailors still out on their 3rd deployment, the 3/1 Foundation stepped up to provide help and support for a Christmas party for the kids of 3/1.
The party was held aboard Camp Pendleton on December 6, 2008. Before dinner and a visit from Santa, the children gathered to enjoy games and snacks, during which time these images were taken.
It was a fun occasion, but dampened somewhat by obvious underlying emotions due to the absence of fathers and husbands. One had the distinct feeling that the real Christmas for these families will take place in late January when the battalion is scheduled to return home.

| 1204.Laurens-Spartanburg Chapter of ThriventThese photos were taken at Musgrove Mill State Park. This is the fourth year that the Laurens-Spartanburg Chapter of Thrivent Financial has sponsored a Join Hands Day project at Musgrove Mill. This year, there was trail maintenance, harvesting rocks, and erosion control that took place. The work was done by Girl Scout troops from Union, Clinton, and Duncan, SC.
The rock harvesting was hard work. They dug out rocks by the river bank and moved them to another place where there had been soil erosion. Some of the rocks were huge, especially this one they were determined to bring out. I think the Park Ranger inspired them when he stated he didn't expect them to finish that day. Well, guess what??
At the end of the project, the workers were given a hot dog lunch with all the fixin's. These girls will be presented with the special Join Hands Day Girl Scout patch. The Join Hands Day organization made it available this year. This was definitely a case of young and "mature" hands working together to make a difference in their community. And they all had a great time doing it.
Respectfully submitted,

 | 1206.1stBn, 1st Marines Golf Tournament 2008The second annual 1/1 (1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division) Golf tournament took place October 27, 2008 at the Newport Beach Country Club, Newport Beach, California.
The citizens of Newport Beach once again proved their generosity and willingness to support 1/1, their Adopted Battalion. After the early morning fog gave way to sunshine, it was beautiful day of golf. Afterward, players, 1/1 Marines, and guests enjoyed a reception on the club patio, followed by dinner in the dining room and an enthusiastic auction of several premium level prizes.
Distinguished guests and 1/1 Tournament players included MajGen Tom Waldhauser, Commanding General 1st Marine Division, MajGen Jed Pearson, USMC(ret), LtCol Tye Wallace, Commanding Officer of the battalion, Maj Pete McAleer 1/1 Executive Officer, and 1/1 Sergeant Major, Troy Dabney. As well as 1/1 and 1st MarDiv, guests included Marines from I Marine Expeditionary Force, also headquartered at Camp Pendleton. USMC combat vehicles on display courtesy 1/1 and 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance battalion. 1st Marine Division is the largest, oldest, and most decorated division in the United States Marine Corps.
The 2008 Tournament Chair was once again Mr. Dan Marcheano, Newport Beach resident and owner of the Arches restaurants, assisted by select members of the Newport Beach 1/1 Adoption Committee and other volunteers.
1/1 is scheduled for deployment with 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit in early 2009, 1/1's fifth deployment since its Adoption by the community of Newport Beach in December 2003. One day after the tournament 1/1 boarded US Navy ships for a three week training exercise at sea off the coast of Southern California.
100% of the proceeds from the 1/1 Golf Tournament will be used to support the Marines, sailors, and families of 1/1, both when the Battalion is deployed and when it's at Camp Pendleton, and to support 1/1's Marine Corps Birthday Ball in November 2008.
