Spring High Rat Terriers
"Home of Champions"

Susan Helen Cooney and Bruce Norman Strnad, married, of Spring High Rat Terriers in Lake City, Florida welcome you to our photo site.  This is a very comprehensive website of our hobbies and interests, which is a mixture of educational text and over a thousand photos and documentation.  Be sure to click on each album's title to open it up to view the contents.  We are now  celebrating our EIGHTEENTH YEAR RAT TERRIER ANNIVERSARY, from 2000 to 2018. See our special anniversary album for a trip down memory lane with the fabulous dogs that appear in our pedigrees.

THE HISTORY OF THE RAT TERRIER
The Rat Terrier is an American breed descended from the terriers brought over by English miners and other working class immigrants.  These terriers probably included crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and the now extinct White English Terrier.  These dogs were used as ratters, and gambling on their prowess in killing rats was a favorite hobby of their owners.  Some of these dogs were crossed with Whippets or Italian Greyhounds (for speed) and Beagles (for hunting ability).  Eventually, these tough little terriers evolved into today's Rat Terrier.  The breed was popularized by President Teddy Roosevelt, who hunted with his Rat Terriers.  Many are still used as ratters and squirrel hunters, particularly in the South, where they are sometimes known as "feists."

THE DIVERSIFIED RAT TERRIER GENE POOL: RTs, AHTs & TRTs
The Rat Terrier (RT) and the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier (TRT) were recognized by the United Kennel Club on January 1, 1999 as two distinct terrier breeds, mostly distinguished by their different leg lengths.  But before that time, the two types were given letter designations by Universal Kennel Club International (UKCI) and the National Rat Terrier Association (NRTA): the longer-legged, square Rat Terriers were referred to as Type A/Class A Rat Terriers, and the shorter-legged, rectangular Rat Terriers were referred to as Type B/Class B Rat Terriers.  Type A and Type B Rat Terriers were often crossed, and all were registered together with UKCI as Rat Terriers.  The NRTA frowned on crossing the two.  The United Kennel Club (UKC), however, decided to seperate the two types completely, and the shorter-legged Rat Terriers  were re-named to Teddy Roosevelt Terriers (TRTs).  The Hairless Rat Terriers, either actually hairless or coated carriers of the hairless gene, were recognized by United Kennel Club on Jan. 1, 2004 and were renamed to American Hairless Terriers (AHTs) and taken out of the Rat Terrier gene pool.  But from 1999 to 2004, anyone registering a Rat Terrier with UKC had to designate it either as "C" for coated variety, or "H" for hairless variety.  So, now in the UKC show ring you will see RTs, AHTs and TRTs in the Terrier Group, and each has its own Breed Standard.

SIZING UP A RAT TERRIER: INCHES OR POUNDS?
Various registries have set different breed standards for rat terriers, and all of this leads to confusion when discussing sizes.  Quoting here from AKC: American Kennel Club, ARTA: American Rat Terrier Association,  NRTA: National Rat Terrier Association, UKC: United Kennel Club, UKCI: Universal Kennel Club International, RTCA: Rat Terrier Club of America
TOT - under 5 lbs (NRTA)
TOY - 10 lbs or less (UKCI)
TOY - 10 lbs or less and  height not to exceed 12 in. (NRTA)

MINIATURE - over 10 lbs up to 18 lbs, height not to exceed 15 in. (NRTA)
MINIATURE - at least 10 in., not to exceed 13 in. (AKC with its club RTCA)
MINIATURE - not exceeding 13 in. (UKC with its club ARTA)
MINIATURE - over 10 lbs to 18 lbs (UKCI)
STANDARD - over 13 in. and up to and including 18 in. (AKC with its club RTCA)

THE GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE RAT TERRIER
The Rat Terrier is a muscular, active, small-to-medium hunting terrier.  The preferred ratio of length of body (posternum to point of buttocks) to height (withers to ground) is 10:9.  The head is broad, slightly domed, wedge-shaped and proportionate to the size of the body.  Ears are V-shaped, set at the outside edges of the skull, and may be erect, tipped or button when the dog is alert.  The Rat Terrier may have a natural tail carried in an upward curve, a natural bob tail, or a docked tail.  The Rat Terrier comes in solid white, other solid colors with markings, and white with a variety of colored patches.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RAT TERRIER
Terriers as a group are characterized by feisty temperaments, weather-resistant coats, muscular bodies and strong, independent natures.  The Rat Terrier is an energetic, alert dog whose curiosity and intelligence make him easy to train.  The Rat Terrier has sometimes been described as having a dual personality.  He is a fearless, tenacious hunter with seemingly unlimited energy.  When he is not hunting, however, the Rat Terrier is an exceptionally friendly companion, getting along with children, other dogs, and even cats he knows.  Rat Terriers enjoy human companionship immensely and will enthusiastically share any activity with their owners.

Our personal goals as active members of the rat terrier community since 2000 are as follows:

1. To selectively breed pedigreed, registered, OFA-certified health tested and DNA-tested PLL Clear/Normal adult rat terriers that exhibit the BEST COMPANION TEMPERAMENT, along with CORRECT BREED TYPE AND CONFORMATION, to meet the breed standards as set forth by UKC (United Kennel Club) for Miniature Variety and Standard Variety rat terriers, and UKCI (Universal Kennel Club International) for toy rat terriers.  Both AKC and UKC do not recognize or list toy rat terriers in their breed standard.

A NOTE ABOUT THE HEALTH TESTING WE DO: Health screening is one of the major tools that responsible breeders use to improve the genetic health of their dogs and puppies.  We believe in the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals's motto, "HEALTH-TESTED PARENTS FOR HEALTHIER PUPPIES."  See the OFA certified health testing we do on our dogs at: http://www.offa.org and type in the dog's full registered name.  We health test and certify our dogs for ... 1. congenital cardiac disease via veterinary inspection ... 2. patellar luxation (kneecaps) via veterinary inspection ... and now, as of October 2009, ... 3. Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) via DNA testing.  We began OFA certified health testing on our rat terriers for cardiac and patellas in June, 2003 and CHIC certifying our rat terriers in 2005 when rat terriers were added to the CHIC list of breeds. CHIC Website: www.caninehealthinfo.org

2. To raise happy, healthy QUALITY puppies for ourselves, thereby keeping our breeding program moving forward.

3. To carefully place pet quality and show/breeding potential puppies (as well as an occasional retiring adult dog) in their best forever homes, and to assist the new owners as much as possible and for as long as necessary.  References are available upon request.

4. To follow our puppies and dogs and their adventures with their new families over the years. We enjoy puppy sitting or dog sitting for those Spring High rat terriers that live near-by.

-The American Rat Terrier Association: www.imageevent.com/arta
-The United Kennel Club: www.ukcdogs.com
-The American Kennel Club: www.akc.org
-The Universal Kennel Club International: www.universalkennel.com
-The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals: www.offa.org

There are MANY pet registries that register rat terriers.  Some have a better reputation than others.  Both AKC and UKC offer showring opportunities.  Our adult rat terriers are registered with:
-AKC (American Kennel Club, Terrier Group)
-UKC (United Kennel Club) and/or
-UKCI (Universal Kennel Club, International)

We strive to breed like variety/size sires to like variety/size dams.  However, because of the diversity in the rat terrier gene pool, it is probable that smaller-sized puppies may be thrown from larger-sized parents.

We look forward to hearing from you, and we enjoy introducing everyone we meet to this wonderful, versatile breed.

Thank you for your interest.

Q: SUE, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADULT RAT TERRIERS AVAILABLE?
A: Yes!  We are downsizing.  Eivin is available.  You have options with him: show him in the UKC show ring - start a breeding program with him, or add him to your existing breeding program - or have him neutered for a great pet!  He has been a house dog his entire life.  Eivin was born Sept. 14, 2017 so he is not quite 1 year old. He is a handsome, young black tri-color intact (not neutered) male, standard size, never used for breeding.  Eivin stands at about 15 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 19.3 lbs.  He is current on all core vaccines, rabies, is on heartworm preventative meds (Heartgard Plus) and flea & tick control meds (NexGard).  Eivin sells with a current FL Health Certificate which includes a recent heartworm test (he tested negative).  See Eivin's album in the MALES AT SPRING HIGH folder, #6 below.  He can be returned for a full refund if he doesn't work out for you.  Price $500.00 includes his UKC and UKCI  permanent registration papers as "Spring High's Last Frontier" ~Sue 7/9/18

WE DO CERTIFIED HEALTH TESTING
8. WE DO CERTIFIED HEALTH TESTING  (Updated May 2, 2018)
*Click on the title, above, or the thumbnail photo, left, to open this album.*

Every breed of dog has health issues, and rat terriers are no exception.

The health testing of our current adult breeding dogs appears in this album.

OFA Health testing rules require that a dog be one year of age for cardiac and patellas testing, so our younger dogs will appear in this album once they reach their first birthday, go to our vet for a physical exam, and the OFA paperwork is submitted.

Spring High Rat Terriers began OFA-certified health testing in 2003 for cardiac and patellas (kneecaps).  We have been doing health testing ever since.

On October 15, 2009 the University of Missouri developed a genetic DNA test for Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) for all breeds of dogs.  PLL is a very serious and painful genetic condition affecting the lens of the eye that can lead to blindness.  At Spring High, we only breed DNA-tested PLL Clear/Normal dogs and their PLL Clear/Normal offspring, designated as PLL CBP (PLL Clear By Parentage).

Long Haired Rat Terriers
12. Long Haired Rat Terriers  (updated Nov. 9, 2017)
*Click on the title, above, or the thumbnail photo, left, to open this album to view the photos.*

Yes, some rat terriers do have soft, silky coats.  The longer coat becomes evident when the puppy is about 2 weeks old.  These fuzzy puppies are absolutely adorable!

The long coat is caused by an autosomal recessive gene mutation in the FGF5 (fibroblast growth factor 5) gene.  The short hair gene is dominant, labeled genetically as "LL."  A dog with a short coat that carries the long hair gene is labeled genetically as "Ll."  A dog born with a long coat is labeled genetically as "ll."

Where the long haired gene comes from is anybody's guess, because many breeds make up the foundation stock of the rat terrier heritage.  Most long-time breeders will tell you that they've had a long haired rat terrier puppy show up here and there.  However, you will never see long haired rat terriers in the AKC or UKC show ring.

Here are some long haired rat terriers that we have produced:
1. BORN MAY 4, 2001 - RALPH - Spring High's Ralph - black tri male - (Sunflower X Boonton)
2. BORN APRIL 27, 2004 - ALICE - Spring High's Joliet - black tri female - (Sunflower X Boonton)

PEARL RAT TERRIERS
17. PEARL RAT TERRIERS  (Updated Jan. 21, 2017)
*Click on the title, above, or the thumbnail photo, left to open this album to view the photos.*

The pearl color in rat terriers is also called Isabella in other breeds.  It is the dilute of chocolate.  Controversy over the color name once had pearl dogs registered with UKC as blue fawns, which was totally incorrect, and very confusing to breeders.  Pearl is now accepted as a registerable color and is unusual as it requires both parents to either be the color or carry the genetics to make the color, chocolate and blue/dilute together.  Pearl rat terriers can be pearl and white, pearl/white/tan (tri-color) or pearl sable and white.  Pearl sable is also referred to as tan/pearl sable or red fawn.  We have owned and produced a few pearl adults and puppies and are featuring them in this album.
