Title: Mexican Jewelry

Author:  Mary L Davis and Greta Pack

Type of Book: paperback

Average Price:  CHEAP! Starting at $4.95 on Amazon
In Print: yes
Pages: 262

Brief Description of Book:
This is a classic book on jewelry first published in 1963. Mexican Jewelry covers a Mexico that I am sure has been lost to progress. It is fascinating armchair travel guide on jewelry. The first half of the book goes deep into the history of Mexico, the conquest of Mexico by the Spanish the different regions of the country and the jewelry that is created in these regions. Nice focus on Mexican motifs from the pre-Hispanic period you may even be able to identify some of those unusual shaped creatures that are on some pieces. The book focuses on adornment for women as well as a short section on the men’s Charro style. The authors always keep the text jewelry related.

Title: Bijoux

Author: Deanna Farneti Cera

Type of Book: paper

Average Price:  $19.95 list price, mine was $12.48 on Amazon

In Print: yes

Pages: 378

Brief Description of Book: Yummy!

Bijoux is full of really beautiful photos of high quality top shelf pieces of costume jewelry. The jewelry pieces selected strike a nice balance between rare and unusual jewels and those items that could be attained with a good eye and a healthy checkbook. There are no duds in this book.

Bijoux hails from an Italian publisher and the chapter text and captions are presented side by side in Italian and English. It seems ironic the author called the book Bijoux which is French for jewelry. Perhaps they used the French because there are so many French pieces included.

The first short chapter discussed the difference between imitat...

Average Price: starts at $21.99 used in hard cover, new paper at $33.00
In Print: yes
Pages: 432

Brief Description of Book: An encyclopedic study of East Indian jewelry. A labor of love by the author who had been collecting since the 1950’s. This is a huge book full of color and black and white photos, which you can look at it over and over again. I have had this book since the summer and everyone who comes to my house seems to take a long look through it. Even friends who do not “get” jewelry seem to get lost in the pages for a while.

Traditional Jewelry of India features more than 800 photos of jewelry and people wearing jewelry as well as animals and statues. The photos of people wearing some of the pieces are helpful because you can’t figure out how some pieces should actu...

Brooches: Timeless Adornment is a shiny new picture book that focusís on vintage, antique and contemporary brooches. Most of the pieces are fine jewelry but there are a few costume pieces. Many of the fine jewelry designs will be quite familiar to costume jewelry collectors since there has historically been so much overlap between the fine jewelry world and costume. For example there are fruit salad pieces, blinding deco clips, fabulous florals and charming figurals. There are examples from Van Cleef and Arpels, David Webb, Seaman Schepps, Suzanne Belperron, Schiaparelli, Alexis Bittar, and many unmarked treasures.  There are some silly parts in this book but the nice layouts and high quality pieces make up fo...

Brief Description of Book

This is a good book for beginners. It is really an overview. The
information
is well organized with a table of contents and index so the reader can find the answer to most queries. This book is similar to How To Be a Jewelry

photography and higher production values. The title promises Secrets
and How to Buy More For Less. I am not sure that these claims can be supported.

There is good section on findings. For example, did I buy a fur clip or a dress clip? Secrets to Collecting Jewelry includes clear photos of findings so the curious reader can discover the difference. Another question that

Title: Answers to Questions about Old Jewelry, 6th Edition

Author: C. Jeanenne Bell

General description: This book focuses on older jewelry, 1840-1950. It's been expanded and revised several times. The first edition came out about 20 years ago, this latest edition is from 2003. It's got tons of pictures, pieces you will not see in any other book, especially some of the earlier items. And, it's one of the few books that extensively covers eras, what was popular during the decades, both in fashion and jewelry. Gives some insight as to how trends changed and followed society, which is a nice historical perspective not found in most other books.

This review will cover several categories and will include a rating for that category 1-10, 1 being 'forget it, 10 being 'must have'. There will also be a short comment about each category and then a general review at the end.
