Speed Sailing over 30 MPH (July 2010)Long Island has some great flatwater windsurfing sites. This particular one on the south shore is particularly shallow and protected by the barrier islands. I pulled out my vintage (90's equipment) Tiga 260 and 6 meter North Spectro. While pro speed sailors reach speeds in the 50 range, sailing in the 30's and making planing jibes is still a rush! Didn't have a helmet cam so these videos were taken holding the camera with my mouth. (TEETH CAM) Under Construction Videos coming |

North Carolina Challenge 2010 (Sept 23, 2010)A WaterTribe Event. A 100 mile adventure race, starting at Cedar Island in a loop thru Beaufort, and finishing at Cedar Island. This was my first time sailing my kayak in a long distance challenge. For many EC veterans this is just a warm-up. Plenty challenging for me with my chronic health issues! Sunny and warm, Day 1 (mostly windlass) was hard for the sailors who rowed, paddled, and pedaled their boats. Day 2 brought a following SW wind to everyone's delight to help push us to the finish. I tried to get shots of everyone but sorry I missed many of you! Hope you enjoy the pics, videos, and narrative. |

"THREE AMIGOS" (July 2, 2008)My latest sailing ship. An 18 ft. kevlar(55 lbs) Seda Amigo with 10 ft. inflatable amas. This kayak is a hybrid double with an upswept bow for a dry ride. The roomy 40 inch aft cockpit is more centered and designed to paddle as a single or take a small person along as well as my dogs. The hull is a fishform shape and has lots of volume for storage up front and a hard cockpit cover which makes a convenient large hatch for camping gear. These features, the spacing of cockpits and hatches, it's sail carrying capability, and the dream of entering a versatile class 3 sailing/paddling kayak in a WaterTribe Challenge, are the reasons I chose this boat for my rig design. Max speed so far is 12 knots reaching in flat water. A great light air performer that's easy to paddle home if the wind dies. Did I say I love this kayak! |

Parafoil Kite (June 14, 2009)This is home made from panels cut from an old spinnaker and sewn on a single stitch light duty machine. Measures 40 inches by 34 inches and needs 8 mph winds to fly due to it's heavier weight cloth. A fun downwind ride in my 25 inch wide kayak in 10-20 mph winds. Single line control which snap hooks to a line on the deck or can be run to the bow via a looped line.
Lighter weight ones which fly in less wind are sold at kite stores or you can buy the material and make your own. |

Some pictures of the Cedar Island Challenge. NE winds 15-20 with higher gusts produced too much spray for my non-waterproof camera to chronicle the whole journey. |
