Fish-Owl Loop: Days 4 & 5

May 9 & 10, 2019

Fred & Mike - Taking a Break in Owl Canyon
Day 4

We awoke to bright and sunny skies and got an early start up Owl Canyon at about 9:30 am. As the day went along the clouds rolled in and it got a lot chillier, and we had a shower or two just as the weather report had predicted. Hiking in these conditions is not as uplifting as with blue skies, feathery clouds, and bright colors of the canyon walls in the sunlight but it was satisfying nonetheless.

Even though you are going uphill hiking Owl seems a little easier as there are more defined trails across wide benches, although sometimes you find yourself bushwhacking up the wash when there is a great trail on the other side of the wash that you missed along the way. It is very scenic with spectacular Neville's Arch, neat pouroffs and pools with whispering waterfalls.

We were heading for the spectacular Pouroff Pool camp that we had stayed at in 2007. We arrived in camp at about 3:30 pm after a grueling climb to avoid a huge pouroff. I was happy to see that the camp was unoccupied. Back then I would have rated the camp as a 10 – the camp was open with views to the pool and waterfall, and there was a great level area for tents. In 2019, brush was choking the camp, cutting off the view of the pool. There had been some erosion and the tent area was not as nice and some of the cottonwood trees ringing the camp had fallen across the site. Now I'd give the camp a 5 or 6 rating.

Day 5

During the night we had several periods of rain and when we got up in the dark everything was wet. We got out of camp in good time (6:30 am). The climb up and over the Pouroff was a grueling one, taking us about an hour and 15 minutes. Nick and Jon were quite a help getting us up and over this hump. It seemed a whole lot easier going down back in 2007. The rest of the way was no picnic either. We were all glad to see the canyon rim and to trudge into the trailhead parking lot. After having lunch in Blanding, everything felt a lot better for the long drive home.

Note photo takers are given in the titles under the thumbnails:

It was a fairly short jaunt up the canyon from our break to our final campsite, near a large pouroff pool with a waterfall. Fortunately no one was camped there. The pouroff pool is located HERE. (3:30 pm)

Our cramped "tent city" - this campsite has changed significantly since our last visit in 2007.  Compare this (2019) photo with THIS ONE taken from about the same spot in 2007. Back then there was very little vegetation between the camp and the pool - see this PHOTO of Danny Stallings, who was sitting at about the same spot as Mike & Nancy. Note the cottonwood to the right of Danny, is now a log laying on the ground.

Looks like I overdid it on the Kool Aid - too many left after 4 days

Fred: "Of the 4 remaining KQQLaid jugs... each end one was seemingly light as when I packed them out, I discovered that they had been depleted sometime prior. i.e. dumped. Thank you for speaking up that I didn't need to be carrying all that weight... but taking one for the team, the problem wasn't mine. :--)  Next year we need electrolytes, not sugar? I'm understanding that our days of needing sugar are over."

Day 5

After off and on rain all night, Allan got us up at O'dark 5 am and got the Dragonfly going for coffee and cocoa.  We packed up our gear and tents using our headlights and staggered out for our cold cereal breakfast.  A shower ensued just before we left camp.

This and the previous photos were taken by a couple of women from Pocatello who were starting out.  After we packed up we headed to Blanding where we had lunch at the Homestead Steakhouse.  This year Allan did not order the "Chef's Salad" but opted for the salad bar instead.  After lunch we split up and went our separate ways: Fred, will, & Nancy back to New Mexico; Mike and Allan; and Nick, Tracy, Bill, and Jon - made it to Burley, Id that night and on to Lynnwood the following day with a stop in Yakima at Tom & Jerry's Mexican restaurant for dinner.

When I got home, I took out the filters - on the left is an original Pur Scout filter and the one on the right is the redesigned Katadyn Guide replacement which has a mesh screen (under the filter).  The Guide filter worked much better than the original.  Water quality was good this year - compare filter color to the one from 2017 HERE
