Marash, Turkey-1919 Dr. S.E. Kerr
Dr. Stanley E. Kerr - b:1894-d:1976

This information gives the length of a man's life, but it does not tell what a man did with his life.  What Dr. Kerr did with his life was to serve his fellow human beings and for that he should be remembered.

For his monumental account of the tragic events in Marash in 1919, "The Lions of Marash," he deserves the eternal love and remembrance of Marashtzis everywhere.
As a member of the Near East Relief, Dr. Kerr (along with his soon to be wife, Elsa Reckman) served in Marash from 1919-1920 and from 1921-1922.
From Dr. Kerr's Obituary

Dr. Stanley E. Kerr earned a Ph.D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1925, returning to the Middle East as Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at the American University of Beirut.  In 1965, following 40 years of faculty service, he retired with the rank of Distinguished Professor.  The Republic of Lebanon has conferred upon him its Order of Merit and its Order of Cedars (Chevalier rank) in recognition of his service.

The collection of these photographs were generously sent to me by Dr. Kerr upon my request. Unfortunately, I was never able to sit down with Dr. Kerr to identify each one.

Many of the photographs appear to depict similar events or scenes, which leads me to believe they were taken in sequence.

The photographs that were in the book, The Lions of Marash, by Dr. Kerr, are marked as such, some of which I do not have copies of.

(as noted on the inside flap of the LofM).  It also tells of the tragic betrayal by the French of the Armenian inhabitants in Cilica.

It was during this visit, that Dr. Kerr showed me his entire collection of photos from Marash.  I requested a copy of his photos, which he gladly said he would provide.
Shortly thereafter, the pictures that you see in this collection were sent to me.  Unfortunately, Dr. Kerr and I never had the opportunity to meet again in order for him to identify each photo.  Some will look familiar as they are featured in his book, 'The Lion's of Marash'.
