Armenian Art Collection (August 29, 2018)These different items are an accumulation of art by Armenian artists that are part of my personal collection. I do not have the wall space to display them and feel I would like to offer them for sale. I will list each item with as much information as I have available. Unfortunately, hindsight is 20-20. None of us kept track of all the pertinent information back in the day. They have all been remounted in their original frames, with the exception of some of the smaller pieces. If you are interested please contact me either by phone: 212-532-4031 or email: joyzcho@verizon.net or joyzcho@msn.com Please be sure to write: Armenian Art in the subject line of your email. If you want anything shipped, you will have to be responsible for the handling/cost. I will have UPS give a quote for packing/shipping. If you have transport, I live in a doorman building, so availability is 24-7 for pick up. |

Family Art (September 18, 2017)Hi Everyone: I am showing you a variety of pictures from my collection that I've accumulated over the years. These are for you to chose from and to adopt. Most of them were done by your Auntie Mimi. There will be a description below each one including the size of the outside of the frame, whether its under glass, and the medium used. I did not know some of the artist's names and wasn't totally sure of the type of medium used, but I did my best guess. Unfortunately, I missed out on keeping records of each item so some information will be lost forever. If more then one of you picks a picture you want, I suggest you work that out among yourselves or Linda is the final arbitrator. I hope that you will enjoy your selection. Love, Joyce |

Marash, Turkey-1919 Dr. S.E. Kerr (July 1, 2010)Dr. Stanley E. Kerr - b:1894-d:1976
This information gives the length of a man's life, but it does not tell what a man did with his life. What Dr. Kerr did with his life was to serve his fellow human beings and for that he should be remembered.
For his monumental account of the tragic events in Marash in 1919, "The Lions of Marash," he deserves the eternal love and remembrance of Marashtzis everywhere. As a member of the Near East Relief, Dr. Kerr (along with his soon to be wife, Elsa Reckman) served in Marash from 1919-1920 and from 1921-1922. From Dr. Kerr's Obituary
Dr. Stanley E. Kerr earned a Ph.D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1925, returning to the Middle East as Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at the American University of Beirut. In 1965, following 40 years of faculty service, he retired with the rank of Distinguished Professor. The Republic of Lebanon has conferred upon him its Order of Merit and its Order of Cedars (Chevalier rank) in recognition of his service.
The collection of these photographs were generously sent to me by Dr. Kerr upon my request. Unfortunately, I was never able to sit down with Dr. Kerr to identify each one.
Many of the photographs appear to depict similar events or scenes, which leads me to believe they were taken in sequence.
The photographs that were in the book, The Lions of Marash, by Dr. Kerr, are marked as such, some of which I do not have copies of. |

The Sketch Art of Jewelry (October 4, 2009)Among my father's (Joseph Chorbajian of Hollycraft Jewelers) files, I found the following sketches beautifully executed in paints on vellum. Fortunately, these were not lost like so many other things with the sale of the business and the closing down of the family home. Although a great many of the pieces that Hollycraft manufactured were created by my father and his staff, one cannot overlook the significant contribution that jewelry sketch artists made to the industry, especially during the Golden Age of Costume Jewelry. Several of these designs were undoubtedly made for fine jewelry. Some are marked with Cartier's embossed logo. I have no idea how my father came across these, but am thrilled to have them. There are no names of the artist's except for one that looks like 'Fearn'. The only photo in the group was marked 'W.J. Gould, Paris'. In addition, there were the following initials: 'HT' or 'TH','MA', 'NB' and 'PR'. Trying to identify the designers will be a daunting task as there are no records from this period. Despite that, I am thrilled these 193 designs survived. Some of these were used in the manufacture of Hollycraft. Those of you who are Hollycraft followers will recognize certain pieces. I hope that you will enjoy them as much as I have. Each one is a work of art in itself and if you could see them in person, you would truly appreciate the detail each artist rendered. |

Club 15 (September 13, 2009)Sometime in the late 1940's 15 Marashtzi ladies in the New York Metropolitan area decided that they would meet once a month (except July and August) by alternating at each member's home. They met for lunch either chatting about life or working on some current handcraft comparing notes. At the time they organized, their husband's predicted that this endeavor would not last 6 months. To everyone's surprise, except for the ladies, they met for 25 years. Lunch, by the way, was never a salad or sandwich. It was unheard of for a Marashtzi woman to have anything less then a full course Armenian meal starting with mezza and ending with an array of pastries. The original ladies of the group were:
Alice Bazarian Elize Cherian Armenouhi Chorbajian Araxi Harutunian Mariam Harutunian Rose Harutunian Zeyeke Haytaian Lucy Hazard Baidzar Koomruian Kohar Koomruian Elize Mugar Lucy Mugar Mary Mugar (eventually replaced by Helen Helton) Arouse Topalian Berjouhi Vanheskian
These ladies were also very independent and hip taking full advantage of holidays such as Halloween and Christmas to put on a full court preparation of fun and frolic. They even took themselves, all dressed to the nines, to the Copa Cabana nightclub without their husbands. By the best guesstimate, this took place around 1948-1949. Club 15 ladies also had the entrepreneur spirit. They had a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer each new year they met and collected dues at each meeting. I know that when Armene Chorbajian was the Treasurer, the dues were $1.00 at each meeting. In addition to pictures that reflected their time together, one will find photographs of other functions which included members of Club 15 and their families. This album is dedicated to their memory. |

Marashtzi Reunion (August 31, 2009)How can we all thank Gloria, Bob, Claire & Grace for the wonderful Sunday in Greenwich? A reunion of the Marashtzi Offspring...what a special idea with very special people. We are all so fortunate to have had this extraordinary extended family to grow up with. Our blessings are enumerable in that we grew up among people who loved us unconditionally and supported all of our endeavors. Here are the photos that I took at random on Sunday. I did nothing to edit them so here goes... |
