In Feb, we decided shop needed brightening & cleanup. So-I started painting walls "the old fashioned way"

Shop is 40 x 50 x 16

We borrowed our friends paint pump for this job. It's an airless sprayer. MUCH faster than man-powered roller.
Enlarge photo 5enlarge 36KB, 432x576
5
We also rented scissor lift for a few days.

Easier-faster-safer.

Enlarge photo 6enlarge 37KB, 432x576

Sprayer worked well. It took 2 coats. There's still a lot of overspray drift from this type application

Neighbor/friend Andy Benoit came over & commanded wall-studding project
Enlarge photo 12enlarge 28KB, 432x576

Butler steel building is OK-but it doesn't lend well to modification...like studding walls for insulation & interior wall usage.

Larry (r) & I fasten plates under Andy's direction

22
Our steel stockpile needed help also. Cleanup time
Enlarge photo 23enlarge 41KB, 432x576
23
We purchased commercial support racks & modified them slightly for our use. Added stops @ outer end to keep steel from rolling forward & added wire mesh between supports to contain smaller pieces. It's 5' betwen supports

This is solar battery charger we use on our 12V portable fuel tank
Enlarge photo 53enlarge 42KB, 576x432
53
No drilling on tank-I just made HD bracket to clamp onto stock "lifting ring". Panel is slanted to facilitate rain washing
Enlarge photo 54enlarge 46KB, 576x432
54
Solar panel chargers put out more than 12V, but very low amperage
Enlarge photo 55enlarge 47KB, 432x576

This is voltage of a deep-cycle battery w/no charger connected.
Enlarge photo 56enlarge 43KB, 432x576

This yr we "stake" bags for burning. Rod is welded to flat plate for support. Bags don't blow, even on windiest days.
Enlarge photo 59enlarge 60KB, 432x576
59
We needed water for hand washing when handling corn seed & insecticide. I decided to mount an old water (never pesticide use) on 5th whl seed trailer
Enlarge photo 60enlarge 39KB, 576x432
60
Water tank is secured to framework & mounted to top of 5th whl. Only 2x 1/4" holes in crossbrace of trailer.
Enlarge photo 61enlarge 35KB, 576x432
61
Water gravity feeds into 1/2" lines
Enlarge photo 62enlarge 33KB, 576x432
62
Front of tank is held by beam clamps-no drilling needed or desired into frame I-beams
Enlarge photo 63enlarge 32KB, 576x432
63
This is final product. Straps only hold tank down. Fore-aft movement is secured by frame stops against tank
Enlarge photo 64enlarge 35KB, 432x576

Corn planting in 2005

Enlarge photo 92enlarge 43KB, 576x413
92
We started sidedressing corn early this yr. All went very well
Enlarge photo 93enlarge 37KB, 432x576
93
We typically travel @ 5 mph for sidedress. We could go faster, but I think equipment will live longer @ reasonable speed
Enlarge photo 94enlarge 94KB, 576x432
94
Using Hypro mole knives (some sidedress-some B33) gave good depth control & Blu-Jet covering attachments do an excellent job we feel
Enlarge photo 95enlarge 48KB, 432x576

Corn was hit by frost/freeze @ 2 collar size
Enlarge photo 98enlarge 115KB, 576x432
98
A week after corn recovered from frost/freeze, a hail storm pulverized same plants
Enlarge photo 99enlarge 120KB, 576x432
99
Beans were in cotyledon-monofoliate stage when hailed upon. A few days before hail, this field had population of 140K & still emerging. Post-hail count was 80K. We replanted this field

Spraying corn on June 5. We received about 0.3" of rain a few days before this. But-corn stand looks good
Enlarge photo 101enlarge 68KB, 576x432

80' boom takes 32x30" rows. Hagie 2100 has been good sprayer
Enlarge photo 103enlarge 39KB, 576x410

This may be a little hard to identify-but it's an fm xmitter plugged into a 12v cig lighter outlet on Hagie. It has a jump drive stick in it that will store about 200 mp3 tunes.

That fm modulator xmits to certain unused frequencies. I chose 88.1 to receive music.

Unit works fine. No need to upgrade radio to cd/dvd or whatever....yet.

105
Jun 9 we rec'd 0.2" rain on ONE of our corn fields-however, we had to take hail with it! Not sure of long-lasting effects of this stripping
Enlarge photo 106enlarge 45KB, 576x432
106
We needed a 2nd truck-so we finally found a decent used one. Bought this tractor @ the end of June '05. We've had 2nd trailer since Jan 05
Enlarge photo 107enlarge 42KB, 576x432
107
Kurt's only 16, but I suppose he'll work his way into trucking someday
Enlarge photo 108enlarge 35KB, 576x432
108
This truck is a '97 Freightliner. Trailer is a 2002 Wilson 41' hopper
Enlarge photo 109enlarge 60KB, 576x432
109
We put the truck to work immediately. Engine is Detroit 12.5L-400 hp w/"10 spd" transmission
Enlarge photo 110enlarge 79KB, 576x432

Lots of corn to haul yet this yr (2004 crop). Good test wt.
Enlarge photo 111enlarge 41KB, 576x432

CRW beetles were infesting this field on 7/6/05. Silks on ear tip are chewed flush w/shuck
Enlarge photo 112enlarge 27KB, 432x576
112
Tassels of same plants were also loaded w/CRW. Decided to have corn aerial sprayed w/Mustang Max
Enlarge photo 113enlarge 65KB, 576x432
113
This photo was taken 54 hrs after aerial spraying of Mustang Max. This may or may not be the same plant shown 2 frames prior-but it's close. Note good regrowth of silks
Enlarge photo 114enlarge 62KB, 576x432
114
If you look closely under silk you can see crap remnants from CRW beetle life. But-note there are no beetles in this photo
Enlarge photo 115enlarge 47KB, 576x357
115
This nearby plant became "happy hunting ground" for at least one CRW. He/she is laying on mid-rib
Enlarge photo 116enlarge 60KB, 576x432
116
Laying on the ground, you can see many CRW beetles. They're on their back-feet up just like in the tv commercials
Enlarge photo 117enlarge 89KB, 576x432
117
These are the end rows to the previous photos. A more droughty soil & probably not much potential @ this point. No rain!
Enlarge photo 118enlarge 37KB, 576x432
118
AgLeader Insight monitor was used in combine this fall. We previously used PF3000. Insight worked flawlessly
Enlarge photo 119enlarge 51KB, 576x432
119
Overall a good year for combining beans here. Yields were not as high as '04, but still very surprising for the droughtiness that occured in '05
Enlarge photo 120enlarge 58KB, 576x432
120
Still no rust for '05 and only a few fields sprayed for bugs.
Enlarge photo 121enlarge 56KB, 576x432
121
Green stems were not a problem in 05 either. Just smooth combining. Probably biggest problem was dust from endless 0 wind days.

129
We modified our auger this fall to add a "drive-over" to the swing-around hopper.
Enlarge photo 130enlarge 60KB, 576x432
130
Kit includes bracketing to modify swivel unit to accept the heavier drive-over & still be able to tow when needed.
Enlarge photo 131enlarge 57KB, 576x432
131
To free up still more room in our yard, we also added a right-angle pto drive kit. That worked very well & was easily installed
Enlarge photo 132enlarge 71KB, 576x432
132
Kit includes longer pto shaft & all necessary fittings & jack stand
Enlarge photo 133enlarge 69KB, 576x432
133
Drive over works for both hoppers & Brent wagons. We removed the wheels after a few days. It makes it much easier to work around. They only attach w/4 bolts
Enlarge photo 134enlarge 57KB, 432x576
134
Corn was relatively dry by mid-season. 15-16%. Brent 1080 cart can load semi in about 1 min if you run it hard.
