Exxon Valdez oil spill
1. Exxon Valdez oil spill  (May 16, 2024)
March 27 1989, I woke up to listen to horrible morning news. Two nights before in a meeting, a speaker from Cordova said that it wasn't "if but when" we had a spill and here it was! I got a call within a few hours that my boat was need with crew as soon as possible. I grabbed my dad as crew as there wasn't anybody in town available at a moments notice....I, and about a half dozen other Valdez boats had a contract in place as we'ed been called out in January to respond to an oil spill in the Port of Valdez. A tanker had a weld crack crossing the Gulf of Alaska in winter. At that time the tankers were all single hull. We were at Exxon Valdez site within a few hours. We were first responders....

More hunting in Alaska
3. More hunting in Alaska  (May 13, 2024)
Here's some shots of Brown Bear hunting at Cold Bay Alaska as well as Caribou, Sitka Blacktail Deer and Delta Bison. I was lucky enough to draw two different bison tags different years of course, one to hunt in the Farewell burn along the Iditarod Trail in March Thats on the North side of the Alaska Range. We had to fly in and land in a light plane on skis. Another year I drew Delta Bison which was in the fall. Easy to get to by auto. Deer hunting was done in late winter. We used to take a gang on my seiner and hunt on the islands in Prince William Sound. Great fun as long as no one got seasick as the weather can change quickly.

Another old boat
5. Another old boat  (March 17, 2024)
After my health wouldn't allow me to continue purse seining I sold my Seiner the Evie. After a year or so without a boat in Valdez I started looking. The most common boats were Bristol Bay gillneters Which only draw about two feet of water which isn't what I was looking for for Prince William Sound. The Cordova Gillnetters were fast enough but just aren't real comfortable. I always enjoyed working on boats so a junker was an option for the right price....

TRANS ALASKA PIPELINE TRIP IN WINTER
8. TRANS ALASKA PIPELINE TRIP IN WINTER  (March 3, 2006)
In February of 2006 I took a trip from Valdez to Pump Station One on the Trans Alaska Pipeline over the Richardson and Dalton Highways the latter of which is known as "the haul road". It was a work related trip stopping at each pump station to complete the job and spending the night. The pipeline is 800 miles long so we logged over 2000 miles in the week in some pretty wild country. Keep in mind the daylight is short this time of year so some pics may seem dark---because its all the light available.

The Old Dodge
9. The Old Dodge  (January 17, 2006)
The 1947 Dodge Power Wagon was first purchased in Valdez (the then Territory of)Alaska when new by Isaac Woodman. Ike was a prospector and miner and used the truck to access his mines and prospects. I remember this truck when I was a kid growing up and after Ike passed away I had the opportunity to buy it from his grandson. That was in 1979. I kept it for ten years and drove it but at that time I didnt have a shop to work on it so it sat out side and suffered the consequences. Snow caved the roof in and our salt air took its tole on the sheet metal. I sold it to Leroy Churches in 1989 with the stipulation that if he sold it I would get first crack. Leroy did quite a bit of work to it--beat out the roof and gave it a coat of much needed primer but when he left town five years later he sold it to Dan McCabe ak Frog. Well Froggie took to the truck as well and fixed the brakes and gave her a good tune up. He was going to take her to Snug Courner Cove in Prince William Sound so he could drive on the logging roads from his property. Frogs plans went asunder and the truck didnt make it. Five years later my wife bought it for my birthday.  This time I had the shop an heres the results-----
