"Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues)" was written by Allen Toussaint and originally recorded by Three Dog Night in 1974. It made the Top 40 for one week. The song was also recorded by one of my favorite artists, Maria Muldaur, the same year in on her album "Waitress in a Donut Shop." Monkey's call name comes from a chorus in the song: "Play somethin' sweet now make it funky; And let me lay around and grin like a monkey; Play something I can understand; Play me some Brickyard Blues" |
