Valentine's Day 2010
1. Valentine's Day 2010  (February 14, 2010)
It was a cold Valentine's day this year!  But, the dogs didn't seem to mind as long as we didn't stay out in the snow for too long.

April in Wyoming
3. April in Wyoming  (April 30, 2009)
The weather in April has varied wildly from a blizzard to warm and sunny in the high 60s!  I brought my camera on a couple of different outings, and the one thing both trips had in common was the prevelence of ground squirrels!  They can be very quick to their holes, and none of my dogs will "go to ground," so they have to catch them while they are running!

Enjoy - I certainly did!

Spring at Vedauwoo
4. Spring at Vedauwoo  (March 22, 2009)
The Wild Beasts and I spent an afternoon at Vedauwoo, one of Wyoming's most unique areas. It's an easy walk to see all the great things about this area!

About Vedauwoo:

The rock making up Vedauwoo's characteristic hoodoos and outcrops is the 1.4 billion year old Sherman Granite, which represents some of the oldest rock in Wyoming. It is exposed at the surface around Vedauwoo due to the uplift of the Laramie Mountains that began around 70 million years ago. Younger layers of rock and sediment have progressively eroded, and this continues today. The hard granite of vedauwoo is made of large crystals of quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase, and some mica and is more erosion-resistant, resulting in unique, wind and water-sculpted forms. Just east of Vedauwoo, along I-80, spectacular sandstone cliffs are formed of the Permian-age Fountain Formation, which is about 300 million years old. Ancient sand dunes of a broad desert met with the salty waters of a shallow, epicontinental sea, producing beautiful examples of cross-stratification. Fossils of sea urchins, snails, and sea lillies can be found in some of these rocks.

Wildlife abounds in and around Vedauwoo with Wyoming ground squirrels, mule deer, elk, moose, yellow-bellied marmots, least chipmunks, pronghorn, wild turkeys, badgers, prairie dogs, coyotes, and mountain lions all calling the area home. Beavers are found in some of the creeks, where their dams and lodges form cover for a variety of aquatic insects, frogs, and fish. Golden and bald eagles can be seen soaring on the thermals alongside hawks, crows, ravens, turkey vultures, and numerous songbirds. Anglers find brook trout in the streams and ponds but over the past decade or so the populations of these fish have dropped noticeably.

The area surrounding Vedauwoo is quite popular with Wyoming residents, particularly from Cheyenne and Laramie, who enjoy picnicking in the recreation areas near the rocks.

Wyoming Winter
6. Wyoming Winter  (December 7, 2008)
The dogs, Daryl, Shelley and I headed out into the Medicine Bow National Forest to pick out a Christmas tree.  That I forgot to get a permit for.  But, we weren't deterred from playing in the snow with the dogs, and doing a little rabbit hunting later in the afternoon in a field near Glenrock, Wyoming.

Glendo State Park - September 2008
8. Glendo State Park - September 2008  (September 21, 2008)
Well, the lake was WAY down at Glendo State Park here in Wyoming, but that didn't keep the dogs from having a blast.

They all went swimming, chased rabbits, ate more junk food then their mama, got stalked by an owl and its baby in the middle of the night, and got to ride on the 4 wheeler - even though really, Monkey was the only one who really enjoyed it!

Trip to the Lake
16. Trip to the Lake  (October 4, 2006)
The Ratties and I headed out for yet another Wyoming adventure.  I drove around until we found a promising spot- the Twin Buttes Reservoior.  Being the only people and dogs there, we had the whole lake to ourselves!

This beautiful October afternoon turned into a great hunt for the dogs, as Ernie and Lola did a little digging for rodents....  and found a few!  I hope that Rita learned a little by observation about how to hunt and kill varmints!
