Camp Anderson
August 2011

Parade Ground at Camp Anderson

Whenever I go back to Tyrone, I like to make a trip to Camp Anderson, where I spent many happy weeks camping with my Boy Scout Troop.

The stone house and the parade ground at the camp.  It served as the camp headquarters and the site of the "Eternal Flame" (a kerosene pot lantern) that was lit for the duration of the camp.  We would assemble here before meals.  The Junior Leader staff tents would be to the right of the building.

This is the camp for Troop 27.  Camp Anderson is not used as a regular scout camp any more, but hosts training sessions and special camps.

This was our troop's camp every year.  These tents are located on the bank of the Van Scoyoc Creek, which flows through the camp.  We would have 3 or 4 tents like these (2 man tents) for the Scoutmasters and the troop leaders.

Another view - The rest of the troop would sleep in huge army surplus pyramid tents (I think 4-6 cots per tent) which would be located across the field from these tents.  All the tents were dark army green back in those days.

The Elwood Snyder Pavilion located in our camp.  Elwood Snyder was a long time scoutmaster for Troop 27 and one of the pioneers of Tyrone Scouting.

An online article about the dedication of the Pavilion can be found HERE.

When our troop found itself without a scoutmaster (in 1958 or 1959), Elwood Snyder came out of retirement to take on the duties of Scoutmaster.  This was remarkable since he had been the troop's scoutmaster back in the 1930's.

I have fond memories of Mr. Snyder, as he was one of the best scoutmasters we had.
