Magazines, 20rd Shown are 5 magazines, all 20rd: Left to right: 1)Armalite AR18/180, originals will NOT work in an AR15/m16 2)Colt/Armalite steel waffle 3)Colt/Armalite aluminum 4)Colt aluminum .223 mkd floorplate 5)Colt aluminum 5.56 mkd floorplate
Mags 20rd floorplates Same order as previous pic: The Armalite AR18/180 mag is actually a "derivative" of the M16 mag as the AR18/180 was a further developement by Armalite to address some of the problems encountered w/the early M16 program. The waffle is the very early mag, superceded very early by the stamped alumnium mag next in line, the .223 mkd mags are believed to be 69 & earlier mfg, the 5.56 mkd mags after 69.
Mags 20rd followers Same order as previous: All the mags have an alloy follower w/the exception of #1, the AR18/180, which has a plastic follower, I believe this is incorrect & has been fitted to the mag later.
Mags 30rd right Left to right: 1)Numbered body, dk green numbered plastic follower 2)Black plastic follower 3)light green plastic follower
Mags 30rd floorplates Top: early 30rd, numbered body, floorplate mkd 5.56, there is an even earlier variant mkd .223 Center: Post VietNam w/black plastic follower Bottom: later version w/light green "anti-tilt" follower.
Mags 30rd floorplates Left: Viet Nam (67-74) era mfg Center: 74/75-mid 80's mfg Bottom: 80's & later
M261 .22 mag insert This is the mag (insert) for the M261 .22 training device (pictured/described in the training aids album), the M261 simply was inserted in the M16 in place of the bolt/carrier group & enabled the rifle to be fired w/.22cal ammo for training, the insert shown here was used to convert the standard m16 20rd mag for use w/the m261 device, the m261 mag insert simply "loaded" into a standard mag then the .22cal ammo was loaded into the insert. On the left is a standard M16 20rd mag w/the insert in place on the right is the insert itself.
M261 mag insert follwer Here is a view w/the M261 insert laoded into the standard 20rd mag showing the follower.
M261 mag insert assembly M261 mag insert apart, mag insert body on left, follower on top, spring, base & floorplate.
Blank mag R w-m200 rd This mag was used specifically w/blank ammo. it's a standard 20rd mag body, spring, & floorplate, uses a shorter follower w/an aluminum insert in the front of the mag body, the mags are anodized red, inscribed "blank" in white & at top in the pic is an M200 blank cartridge which these are used with.
Blank mag front spine The 3 small rivets hold the floorplate latch as in a standard mag but the aluminum block in the Blank mag can be seen thru the 2 large round holes.
Blank mag follower View of the top of the blank mag showing the shorter follower & the top of the aluminum "spacer".
Blank mag top with M200 blanks A view of the blank mag from the top loaded w/the M200 blank cartridges, note the shorter length of the blanks, reason for the shorter follower & the spacer block in the front of these mags.
Blank mag left side Mags are marked "blank" on both sides.
Blank mag floorplate Same floorplate as a standard 20rd mag.
Blank mag right apart Here the mag is disassembled into it's component parts, follower (shorter than standard), spring, mag body (same as standard 20rd except anodized red & marked 'blank" on both sides), floorplate & the spacer block which fits into the front "rib" of the mag body.
Blank mag left view apart
Blank mag top view of spacer Here is a view of the top of the blank mag w/the follower/spring removed showing the spacer block in place which took up the space for the shorter follower to prevent the M200 rounds from sliding forward when loaded into the mag.
Blank mag & standard 20rd mag right Left is the blank mag for use w/the M200 blank cartridges, right is a standard 20rd mag, this particular mag is an early 20rd w/Colt-Armalite .223 marked floorplate & dk alloy follower.
Blank & standard mag followers Top: Blank mag, shorter follower w/the aluminum spacer block in front. Bottom: Standard 20rd mag follower.
Blank & standard mag bodies Blank mag on left, standard on right showing bare mag bodies from top w/no mag internals in place.
Blank & standard mag bodies bottom Note that other than the red anodizing & "blank" being marked on both sides the mag bodies are the same, both are even marked UI in the same location. I don't know if the blank mags were actually mfg as such or possibly converted from standard mags.
