To give us something to do when we aren't enjoying the pool, we knocked down a wall in the basement, added a bar, pool table and dart board - here are pics of the end result

Basement remodel begins with bringing the wall to the bedroom down to a kneewall
Electrical and a support column are exposed and must be dealt with

Drywall must be finished off too
While we were at it, we added a bunch of new recessed lights and surround speakers for a new home theater system

Some of the new lights in action
The kneewall presented a stability problem - the solution was to sink doubled-up 2x4s into the concrete floor, replace the drywall with a single 4x8 sheet and cover everything with wood wainscot. The result is very sturdy.

Work on the new bartop starts
The bartop is in, the support column is wrapped with a fluted column and the new wainscot has been installed
Ginger kept Steve the contractor company
Voila - the finished product, after a complete paintjob. We hung a 60" plasma tv that runs through a new home theater system, complete with a 12" sub woofer. The media room is open to the rest of the basement, so it can be enjoyed from the bar and pool table

We added a recessed spotlight for the new dartboard.

The media room. Cheryl picked out the new sleeper-sofa and I picked out the tv and stereo. The speakers are all recessed into the walls and ceiling, and the sub woofer is behind the wall in the storage room.

Just a couple loose ends to tie up and we'll call the job finished. We're waiting on the pendant lights over the bar and a pub table, some ceiling fans... I guess a successful job is never finished!
