Gothic Tower Dress
Satine's elegant black velvet gown, with hundreds of diamonds dripping from her neck!! that she wears to the Gothic Tower.  This Shadowcast version is velcro'd down the centre back, to enable 'tearing away' from the body just as the Duke does in the movie!!!  (Will need taking in once I get my proper corset made to wear under it)

Beautiful! Not too many people have ever attempted this dress and I've often wondered why. Compared to Satine's other costumes it looks like it ought to be simple but this proves that it is not.  (I don't sew myself; I just love historic costume and MR costume.) What I really want to know (of course)is WHERE/HOW did you find that amazing necklace?  (You must be keeping the secret to yourself, *lol*).

- for the Mantilla (where Satine uncovers her face upon entering the Tower)
Embroidered Tulle - was $80 per mtr 2yrs ago & lucky remnant find (1.2mtr) reduced $20 per mtr!!!

Black (very) short nap velveteen - approx: $9 per mtr
Front 1/2 of dress, took the pattern from another full length dress I wear.

Then two people pinned me into a fabric sandwich, from the back using the front piece to go by..

Pinning the bustline - remember you have this on inside-out so the shape is reversed.

- pinning down the excess helps form a self-interfacing

Right-way out - there are only the 2 side seams and no boning used in this version.

Centre back/velcro feature - an overlap is sewn down one side before sewing in the velcro into either side.

In hindsight the velcro seam needed to be another foot longer - during MOULINEROUGELIVE! we had one of those infamous "costume malfunctions" & while the velcro 'rip' worked great, our Duke didnt realise his own strength & the dress kept ripping another 12 inches!!!!!!!

The sash only extends to the left side seam - I cut a little longer to allow enough to fold under and stitch back to finish it nicely

Even the right shoulder was 'rigged'with velcro to come apart at the climax of the scene

Not movie accurate but this 'buckle' is simply diamonte' trim FabriTac'd in place.  (it too 'ripped' off during the show so now I have reason to make a more authentic replacement)

Hindsight - I'll be redoing the fur trim - using a wider piece and positioning it closer to the breast, before I replace the buckle

Just the finished sash in an arty photo - I used a dark (yellow based) maroon dupointi silk with a heavy slub - was just a ?40cm remnant lying around for yrs & then in 2003 I went 'oh yeah!'

And the 'piece d'la resistance!' - a replica 2/3's the size of the original actually.  (And for me a case of very real life imitating art when a 'Duke' hoped to romance me back into his arms!) ...

I took WAY too many shots when this was finished.

The white matting of the fur trim was visible around the skirt hemline, so I went around touching it over with a black Niko pen (permanent marker)
