Hurricane Helene (Sept. 28, 2024)Hurricane Helene blew ashore in Florida's Big Bend region as a category 4 hurricane late Thursday night, Sept. 26, 2024, with winds of 140 mph.
We were on the east side of the hurricane here in Lake City, FL.

Yes, some rat terriers do have soft, silky coats. The longer coat becomes evident when the puppy is about 2 weeks old. These fuzzy puppies are absolutely adorable. We are now using the name, TEDDY BEAR RAT TERRIERS to describe these soft-coated rat terriers.
The long hair is caused by an autosomal recessive gene mutation in the FGF5 (fibroblast growth factor 5) gene.
GenSol Diagnostics in Clayton, Georgia does offer a genetic coat length DNA test kit (cheek swab) to find out if a dog carries the long coat gene or not.
CATEGORIES FOR COATS
~REGULAR SHORT COATED RAT TERRIER THAT DOES NOT CARRY THE LONG COAT GENE~
The short coat gene is dominant, labeled genetically as "LL."
The "LL" dog can only pass on the "LL" (short coat gene) to its offspring.
~SHORT-COATED RAT TERRIER THAT CARRIES THE LONG HAIRED GENE~
A rat terrier with a short coat that carries the long hair gene is labeled genetically as "Ll."
The "Ll" dog will pass on the "L" (short coat gene) or the "l" (long haired gene) to its offspring.
~LONG HAIRED RAT TERRIERS~
A rat terrier born with a long coat is labeled genetically as "ll."
The "ll" dog can only pass on the "ll" (long haired gene) to its offspring.
Examples:
1. Lucinda is an Ll, Woody is an ll, pups statistically will be Ll and ll, or 25% short coat and 75% long coat.
2. Annie is an Ll, Bart is an Ll, pups statistically will be Ll and Ll, meaning 50% short coat and 50% long coat.
Where the long haired gene comes from is anybody's guess, because many breeds make up the foundation stock of the rat terrier heritage. Most long-time breeders will tell you that they've had a long haired rat terrier puppy show up here and there. However, you will never see long haired rat terriers in the AKC or UKC show ring because the long coat is a breed disqualification.

The pearl color in rat terriers is also called Isabella in other breeds. It is the dilute of chocolate. Controversy over the color name once had pearl dogs registered with UKC as blue fawns, which was totally incorrect, and very confusing to breeders. Pearl is now accepted as a registerable color and is unusual as it requires both parents to either be the color or carry the genetics to make the color, chocolate and blue/dilute together. Pearl rat terriers can be pearl and white, pearl/white/tan (tri-color) or pearl sable and white. Pearl sable is also referred to as tan/pearl sable or red fawn. We have owned and produced a few pearl adults and puppies and are featuring them in this album.

OUR "COOP DE VILLE" (Updated December 16, 2009)| Our chicken coop is named the "Coop De Ville." Bruce converted the old pony shed and added a fenced-in yard. We have a couple dozen hens that produce brown and aqua-green eggs as well as several roosters that can't tell the time. We've also added young hen turkeys and Tom turkeys to the group. |
