In a Relief & Appointment ceremony at Camp Pendleton, CA, on 18 April 2013, Sergeant Major Jonathan Henry, USMC, of 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division was relieved by Sergeant Major Christopher R. Reed, USMC.
These images begin with the arrival of families and guests, Pre-Parade concert by the Marine Corps Band from San Diego, the ceremony, and finally informal greetings among guests and congratulations to the outgoing and new Sergeant Major. The images of the ceremony are presented in the order of the Sequence of Events as shown in Frame # 18. The passing of the NCO sword symbolizes the relief and appointment when the outgoing Sergeant Major surrenders the sword to the Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Targos, USMC, who in turn delivers the sword to the new Sergeant Major.
