Enlarge photo 1 Nickajack was picked up as a stray in a Costco parking lot in New Orleans.
Enlarge photo 2 At the shelter he was very scared of people and would bark and retreat when someone passed his kennel, but within a few minutes of gentle and calm handling he would settle down.
Enlarge photo 3 Nick is just two years old.
Enlarge photo 4 He weighs 12 lbs.
Enlarge photo 5 He is lean but muscular -- a perfect weight for his little frame.
Enlarge photo 6 He did great on his transport to Chattanooga, travelling quietly and calmly.
Enlarge photo 7 Upon arriving at his foster home, he seemed immediately at ease.
Enlarge photo 8 He would come running to us for pats and attention and didn't appear anxious in the least.
Enlarge photo 9 "Are you my new foster mama?"
Enlarge photo 10 We initially put a belly band on him, because he wanted to mark his new territory a bit.
Enlarge photo 11 Nickajack is attentive, social, and confident.
Enlarge photo 12 He loves it when it's time to lounge on the couch.
Enlarge photo 13 When strangers first come to the house he will bark quite stridently, but he doesn't keep it up too long, especially if the newcomer is willing  to quietly squat or sit down and give Nick a chance to check him out.
Enlarge photo 14 He also likes wandering around the yard, exploring scents and joinng in the gab fest when the neighboring dogs start a conversation.
Enlarge photo 15 Nick does well with other dogs.
Enlarge photo 16 He will share attention and space but of course thinks he deserves the lion's share.
Enlarge photo 17 "Surely you don't disagree!?"
Enlarge MPEG4 18 Nickajack is totally nonchalant about the cat. Click the "download" link for a short video.

Enlarge photo 21 He staked out his favorite lounge spot, from where he has a view of most of the goings-on in the house.
Enlarge photo 22 Enlarge photo 23 Enlarge MPEG4 24 Nick is a frisky and very agile fellow. Click the download link for a short video.
Enlarge MPEG4 25 Even though this little dude is less than 1 foot tall, he gets some height when he jumps! Click for a video.
Enlarge photo 26 Apart from the initial marking, Nickajack has shown lovely house manners, with no inappropriate chewing, messes, climbing, etc. He potties very promptly whenever he is taken outside. He does sometimes get barky when startled by unfamiliar sounds but is moderately responsive to "shhh!"
Enlarge photo 27 He is always happy to see you, with tail wagging furiously.
Enlarge MPEG4 28 Give him any attention and he'll be more than ready to interact with you. Click for a short video.
Enlarge photo 29 When you're otherwise occupied, he isn't pesty about trying to get your attention. He will rest comfortably in his chosen spot but is always alert and ready, just in case you are, too.
Enlarge MPEG4 30 In stereotypical Rat Terrier fashion, he will go from full play mode to full rest mode very easily, ready to take his cues from you. Click for a video.
Enlarge photo 31 Nickajack charms everyone he meets and will quickly work his way into your heart if you choose to add him to your family.
