Several countries have passed laws granting certain rights to animals as “sentient beings”, and in the United States the very well funded and organized animal rights lobby is making headway in get-ting laws passed that move our legal system toward that end.
This paper examines how the concept of animal rights negatively impacts the legal concepts of property ownership, and constitutional concepts by restricting free commerce, limiting or eliminating property rights, and restricting freedom of association. Additional-ly, there are potential additional impacts to tort law, contract law and anti-trust laws that are beyond the scope of this paper.
