Ahead is the Keweenaw peninsula At the bottom of the hill is the Portage River that divides the peninsula. The bridge is the only way across (except by boat in the summer, or across the ice in the winter).
Snow sculptures on Michigan Tech campus The snow fest was a couple weeks ago, but the sculptures remain. Some looked pretty intricate... with ice for windows in some buildings... very cool!
More snow sculptures These things were huge! Too bad we didn't get to see them right when they were made. Kris and Katie said there were some pretty spectacular ones.
John poses next to what may be a stable several horse frieses adorn the front.
Some were HUGE The car in the foreground gives some perspective on this one. WOW!
Looking across the Portage at Hancock Steep hills on both sides of the river make driving interesting in the winter.
Another view...
We were looking for frozen water falls... All we found was this big dam built in 1901. It is a steel dam. Huge, and really neat.
Snow was over knee deep in spots Brrr!
You may be able to see the ice at the bottom of the dam No waterfalls here, just some ice and some running water. Not spectacular, but neat!
Lake Superior was rough! We stopped for some pics.
Water was splashing way up in the air John and Kris waded through more deep snow for a closer look and more pictures. I opted for the warm car.
Houghton Hancock lift bridge In the winter, the bridge is in the down position. It is a double decker bridge. Here the lower half is available for snowmobiles to cross.
