Before the Adventure
We went up a day early to do some sight seeing.  We didn't want to make that long drive in one day.

Our first night camping.
We stayed at Hog Island Country Store and Cottages.  The place is owned by my friend's brother.  :)

A pretty little creek we crossed...
on our way to the falls.

This is the bridge across the creek...
and a nice view of John's back side crossing the bridge!  :)

Tree growing around a huge rock.
Very cool!

Camera timers are great...
and a nice way to get pictures of both of us.  :)

Taking a pic of John taking a pic of...
a small waterfall.  The whole area was flat slabs of rock.

Cool picture of rock...
lots of rock here!

Water rushing over rocks...
told you there was a lot of flat rock slabs!

On top of the falls...
this is the top side.  The water drops off in the gap.

John loved the smooth-worn rocks...
and was getting a picture when I snapped this one.

WOW!
Told you it was big!

The tracks from the mine looking up.
We rode a trolley down here.  It doesn't look too steep, but in the trolley it sure feels like it!

That's our ride.
The trolley doesn't turn around, so you ride up the hill backwards.

Inside the mine.
That's our excellent tour guide on the right.

Some of the more 'modern' equipment.
These hammer drills were in use prior to the mine closing.  Prior to these, they did it all by hand with hammers and a long chisel-type tool.

The mine entrance.
It was a mid-eighties, humid day outside, but inside the mine, the temperature was half that.  The fog is caused by the cold mine air meeting the outside air.

See the man in the picture?
That huge drum to the left is what cable was wound on to get people in and out of the mines, and ore out of the mines.
