Bill, Pop (my namesake), Mark & Elaine with the Mailman and a package
This album contains photos from my childhood growing up at Hundred Springs, a magical place that was a small part of my life in years but so much larger in shaping who I became.
Hundred Springs was once a popular park whose springs and bubbling brooks offered welcome respite from the summer heat. The park was described in a chapter in the 1897 book, "Tyrone of Today", which I have transcribed HERE.
It is hard to imagine that the old stone structure that was our house (really one of 3 apartments) was once a bustling mill that produced dozens of barrels of flour daily for the surrounding area. The operations of the Hundred Springs Mill was described in an article from the Tyrone Daily Herald printed June 23, 1896 that I have reproduced HERE.
Although these articles are less than a year apart, it seems that the management of both the park and the mill changed hands in the intervening months.
Color photos are scans from 35mm slides using a Nikon Coolscan V scanner. The square Black and white photos were taken by my old Brownie Hawkeye camera. They're not the best quality, but it's what I've got. I scanned them in from 3X3 prints on a flatbed scanner at 1200 DPI resolution. Rectangular B&W photos were scanned from 35mm prints.
The descriptions under the photo thumbnails in the album sometimes contain links to maps or additional information. These are identified by "Blue” text for links. I've also inserted links to Google Maps to show where certain photos in the album were taken or to locate features shown in the photos. Click on the link, close the sidebar, then you can then zoom in and out using the mouse wheel or drag the map by clicking and holding.

Pop & Dorsey - picnicking at Whipples Dam. We had that old cooler for many years. It was a mainstay on our many trips to the Sand Beach Lodge, usually filled with iced tea.

Sharon at the end of the bridge over the stream from the Dam to the Juniata. When I was 7, my dad got me my first bicycle, a 24" instead of a 20" (saving a little money). Unfortunately, it was too high so I had to prop it up against something in order to get started. I propped it up at the end of this bridge and took off, immediately falling into the gully and hitting my head on a rock.

Our Camp Shekinah counselor at the end of camp. He was a great guy, but the camp was not much fun. Unlike the Methodist camp I had gone to the previous year, the routine was more like we were a bunch of monks instead of kids. Not much free time to ourselves and hours and hours of Bible study.

This is the Barr's log cabin that was up the road from the barn. It was a really nice place that was originally a hunting lodge for Edwin S Hooker, the manager of the Tyrone Paper mill.

Mark at the upper end of Hundred Springs reservoir. That is a .22cal Stevens Model 70 Visible Loader, which was my favorite gun. It was a pump action that is depicted in this VIDEO. I used to take this gun hunting. It doesn't have a safety but instead you have to put the hammer on half cock (pumping the slide to feed a bullet in fully cocks the gun). Unfortunately, no one told me about this and I would carry it with the hammer in the down position. One time we were out hunting and I was climbing over an obstacle and tripped and dropped the rifle. The hammer hit on a rock and the gun fired going over my dad's head as he was ahead of me.

I'm holding the Stevens Visible Loader. I had another unfortunate incidence with this gun. It wasn't working so I came up with a fix and went out with my brother to test it out. Just below the dam there was a small shed (It's the white rectangle at the left in this PHOTO. So I plunked a few rounds into the shed not knowing that it housed fire hoses, which were damaged. My dad was not very happy with me to say the least!
