Vacation to the Jersey Shore
Brigantine, NJ

Surviving Hurricane Carol
Summer 1954

Mark on the Beach below typical Brigantine resort cabins

In 1953 we took a shore vacation to Brigantine Beach in New Jersey. As we were approaching the resort, my brother Mark pipes up, “There’s Pop”. Elaine replies, “Whose Pop”. Mark responds, “OUR POP”. Sure enough, there standing on the corner with his familiar cigar was our grandfather. No one had told us that our grandparents were going to be there. They must not have stayed long as I could find no photos of them there.

While we were there, we had to hunker down during Hurricane Carol, a major storm which severely impacted New England spared New Jersey its full force. An article about the hurricane’s effects on New Jersey can be found HERE. It describes 25 foot waves pounding the beach.

We rode out the storm in our small unsubstantial beach cabin. I don’t remember much, but I do remember that at one point we opened the door and could see a wave wash around the front of the cabin.

Color photos are scans from 35mm slides using a Nikon Coolscan V scanner. The square Black and white photos were taken by my old Brownie Hawkeye camera. They're not the best quality, but it's what I've got. I scanned them in from 3X3 prints on a flatbed scanner at 1200 DPI resolution.

The descriptions under the photo thumbnails in the album sometimes contain links to maps or additional information. These are identified by "Blue” text for links. I've also inserted links to Google Maps to show where certain photos in the album were taken or to locate features shown in the photos. Click on the link, close the sidebar, then you can then zoom in and out using the mouse wheel or drag the map by clicking and holding.

Good weather returns after a few days.  Mark at the beach.  You can see all the resort cabins lined up.  They are all gone today.

Looking south along the beach.  The post hurricane waves are still pretty big, but people are enjoying the surf.  If you enlarge the photo, the large building in the distance still exists today, the "Legacy Vacation Resort -Brigantine Beach".  The current Google Street View is HERE

The pier in the distance is the "Sea Horse Fishing Pier", which no longer exists.  A google search reveals that it had an interesting history. It was located at 14th and Brigantine Ave if you want to look on Google maps.

Dad in front of our cottage

As you can see this wasn't a 4 star accomodation by any means. During the hurricane, I remember the waves washing around the front of the building.

The hurricane made for great beach combing.  Here are some welks, horseshoe crabs and snails.  Unfortunately, when we took a bunch home, after a few days in my hot attic bedroom, the smell was awful as some of them still were inhabited.
