Devils Creek Bridge

The Ross Lake Mini-Miler was a four day, three night backpacking trip up and back the East Bank Trail along Ross Lake in the North Cascades National Park. Normally, the highway is gated four miles from the trailhead, but a light snowpack and a mild winter led to the early opening of the highway so that we could do this trail in early April. Totals for the hike were 32 miles with 4500 feet in elevation gained.

When we got to camp, there was a little confusion in that Adam forgot to bring a tent for him and Jason. We had to do some switcheroos by putting them in Shelby's tent and putting Shelby with someone else.

Rainbow Point is a boat-in camp, but this early in the season the lake is drawn down to accommodate the snow runoff. This means that you have a steep 60-70 foot climb down to lake level to get water and then humping the 5 gal jugs (40 lbs) up to camp.

Looking north - the trail has been blasted out of the rocks above the lake.
Looking south - you can see the silver forest poking up from the lake. It will be submerged as runoff fills the lake.

"Diving Prohibited" - Even at full water elevation it still is quite a drop. (see HERE) for a photo of the bridge in August 1980 from Troop 24's Crater-Devils 50 miler.

If you enlarge the photo, you can see Adam way in front. He got pissed at us when we found him putting part of his "pile" of troop gear in someone else's pile.
We camped again at Rainbow Point for our last night. We got into camp fairly early so we built a fire and bullshitted around it for hours on end. Chip made a comment: "I haven't moved for 4 hours".
We had a little excitement when Adam took a spoon from Greg's pack over his dad's objection. Greg threw Adam's pack into the woods, a wrestling match ensued which we named "Saturday Night Nitro". We all thought that Greg won, although the next day Adam claimed that he had "Whupped" his dad.
