The Snowbird and the Nyjer Seed (January 3, 2010)The tiny snowbirds, who never bother anyone at all Observed the niger seed I put out for them, A new treat... CATNIP! to them at any rate. It mesmerized them.. they took tiny pecks, then jumped right into the bowl, writhing around, throwing the seeds up into the air as they dined and bathed, bouncing around like tiny black & white marshmellows.

Birds In Flight (Winter 2009)Watching birds in flight....such an amazing experience. Sometimes my camera would catch moments so fleeting I could not see them in person, like the rapid fluttering of little wings. Sometimes my bird visitors looked up in anticipation of flight and it was after those moments I could actually capture a few mid-air pictures. |

Hardy House Finches (Winter 2009)I enjoyed the lively anctics of the house finches--bright pink males and drab brown females--among my most enertaining visitors. They positioned themselves on my deck to catch the heaviest snowfalls, then stared at me while were covered with snow, looking very forlorn. Other times they delighted in pushing each other off the bird feeder. |

Life at the Birdfeeder (winter 2009)Life at the birdfeeder was never dull! In the snow, the birds delighted in playing games with each other such as "this perch is mine", "checking out the competition" "how long can I hover in mid-air" or peering at each other (or at me) while hiding behind the birdfeeder. Finally they had their fill and flew away! |
