Decide how big you want the blanket to be.  I find that I like the thickness of doubled fleece.  Fold over a piece of fleece so that it is the desired size.

The size of the folded piece
measures 17" X 28".

Sew around the perimeter of the
two pieces of fabric (wrong sides together).

Choose fabric to make a binding. Cut 4 pieces.  The width of each piece should be a bit more than double the width of what you’d like the binding to be. Allow for seam allowances plus folding the binding in half.  Two of the pieces should be the length of your blanket.  The other two should be the width of the blanket, plus the width of two binding pieces.

This picture shows the binding pieces prior to sewing them onto the blanket.

Sew the two binding pieces that are the same length as the blanket to their corresponding sides.

Sew the last two binding pieces to the blanket and the first two binding pieces (that have now become part of the blanket sides).

Fold over and press down the edge of the binding about a half an inch, then pin the edge down to the blanket, just covering the seam line.

Hand-sew the binding in place (a good project to do while watching tv or listening to music).  Make sure your stitches are small and don’t show or else curious guinea pigs will want to play with and pull out your stitches.  Don’t panic—fluffy fleece is very forgiving and it is easy to hide hand-sewn stitches.
