Rat Terriers
About the Rat Terrier: To see the breed standard, got to ARTA website. The Rat Terrier is also in the Miscellaneous Class in AKC and full recognition is coming soon (July 2011) is possible.

Living around Rat Terriers all my life, I can say that they are extremely smart, loyal, playful, healthy, and easy to transport.
I have owned alot of the gun dogs and although they are great dogs, the size and intelligence of the Rat Terrier makes it a much better dog for my lifestyle.
Although they do shed, they do not have a "doggy" odor like many dogs do. Dirt never clings to their coat like many breeds and all they need is a slicker brushing every so often.
When raised with children, they make wonderful companions and guardians.
Because of their intelligence, it is necessary to expose them to many social experiences at a young age, Preferably before they are 4 months old.
Unlike many terriers, they are not as intense and high strung, thus not needing much but to spend time with their owners----whether that be lying on the couch all day or taking a dayhike. They are small but sturdy and handle rough terrain and long walks.
