Canyon: Ferriere (Tool Bag)
Located in the cirque of Cilaos. A 5min approach, exit easy and fast by path, this canyon can be carried out in 2-3 hours.
Its interest lies in the pendulum rappel “full throttle” of 60m with an impressive starting relay suspended in the vacuum…
The panoramic views of the cirque are splendid, with a backdrop of Piton of Sugar and part of Yellow Flowers.
The second part is without difficulty with small rappels in cascades (the flow is low). To exit, cross and take path to return towards Cilaos.
Good canyon for initiation and the pendulum rappel is awesome.

Canyon: Bras Rouge
5. Canyon: Bras Rouge  (3-10-2006)
Reunion Island
Canyon: Bras Rouge (Red Arm) Inferior
Average difficulty, anchor options, with rappels in cascades, some jumps and toboggans.
The initial rappel can be carried out at the bridge (45m pendulum rappel) or further up the canyon. The throat widens quickly. Several exits are possible by hiking trails. Several hot spring sources along the bed of the river and the rappel at the Basin Fouquet a superb large 50m cascade.
One can stop the canyon at Red Arm cascade or continue the canyon to the Vault, but it becomes trés long and a car shuttle will be needed.
Attention to frequent falling rocks.
The rocks are very slipping, even in dry weather.

Canyon: Fleurs Jaunes
6. Canyon: Fleurs Jaunes  (4-10-2006)
Reunion Island
Canyon: Fleurs Jaunes (Yellow Flowers)
A beautiful canyon featuring sculptured polished basalt caverns and 7 rappels down mellow water cascades.
After a 5min approach with some small jumps, you will enter the throat (Piton Sucre), a near vertical succession of four basins and rappel toboggans. Then the famous, 55m cascade impressing and exposed but easy technically. You finish with a rappel of 35m and 20m before you can put yourself at ease, but it is not the end of the adventure…
After 30min of steep rise, you will cross along the edge of the mountain and the view leaves at least as many memories as the canyon! Particularly to note the large cascade of 55 m, and the imposing landscape on the whole of the cirque of Cilaos and the mountains, which border it.
Danger of flash flooding resides in the throat of the canyon, must be undertaken in favourable weather.
Attention to frequent falling rocks.
The rocks are very slipping, even in dry weather.

Le Piton des Neiges
7. Le Piton des Neiges  (5-10-2006)
The highest point on the Island.
Piton des Neiges (Snow Peak) is a massive 3,069 m (10,069 ft) shield volcano on Réunion, one of the volcanic islands in the Mascarene Archipelago in the southwestern Indian Ocean. Piton des Neiges was formed by the Réunion hotspot and emerged from the sea about two million years ago. Now deeply eroded, the volcano has been inactive for 20,000 years and is surrounded by three massive crater valleys, the Cirques. Piton des Neiges forms the northwestern two thirds of Réunion, with the very active Piton de la Fournaise comprising the rest.
There are two medium-difficulty tracks leading up to the peak, one from the Cirque de Salazie and one from the Cirque de Cilaos. They meet at a staffed alpine hut about an hour's walk below the peak. Walkers often arrive there after a long day trek up the mountain, and start out very early the next day to experience the dawn at the summit.

Late evening on October 9th 2006 snowflakes fall on the island. Very low temperatures at 2200m of altitude have been recorded, and the clouds form ice crystals very quickly. The day after in the early morning, the snow covered most of the plaine des Sables as well as the Piton de La Fournaise(2632 m). A very rare event that has occured only a few times in the past.

Piton de la Fournaise (French: "Peak of the Furnace") is a shield volcano on the eastern side of Réunion island (a French territory) in the Indian Ocean. It is currently one of the most active volcanoes in the world, along with Kīlauea in the Hawaiian Islands (Pacific Ocean) Stromboli, Etna (Italy) and Mount Erebus in Antarctica. A recent eruption began in August 2006 and ended in January 2007. The volcano erupted again in February 2007, and most recently on 2 April 2007.
Piton de la Fournaise is often known locally as le Volcan (The Volcano); it is a major tourist attraction on Réunion island.
