Butter Box Revisited 1-2-2009 - After spending most of the season on solo trips, (photographing the wildlife) it was great to catch up with my old mates Joe and Nari to do a casual day’s canyoning. Joe suggested we do Butter Box as Nari had never done this canyon and I thought it would be good to see the contrast due to the lack of rain this season compared to this time last season.
It was another hot day in the high 30s, (as it has been so far this summer) but pleasantly cool in the canyon, a great place to be on a day like today. - |

Butter Box 23-2-2008
A great day, sunshine and water, water, water, was the theme for the day. With good water flow through the canyon we did it our way and made the most of it, "had a ball". - I have added some great photos of our canyoning experience in Butter Box taken by our NZ guest, Daniel Clearwater. - |

Gobsmacker In high water 10-2-2008
A fantastic day the canyon really bunged it on for us. It was an extrodinary atmosphere, apart from the high water level, run off from the rescent rain was still steadily flowing in from the overhangs of the canyon creating small waterfalls and rain as it flowed over the top of the canyon walls. |

Empress falls Valley of the Waters Blue Mountains N.P. 14-10-2007
Well another perfect spring day in the Mountains. A nice flow of water through the canyon (a little under average). A group of good friends, great weather, native wildflowers blooming and the perfect canyon to introduce 3 of the group to their first wet canyon experience. As expected the water was cold, colder than we thought it would be, this could explain why we had the canyon to ourselves for the day. In anticapation of the water temp and a large group of 8 we decided to take longer ropes 1 X 40m and 1 X 30m to allow the belay from out of the pool, this was a good call as the water was very cold. - |

Bindook Chasm Bindook Blue Mountains N.P. 29-9-2007
Also known as Myles Chasm or Bindook Falls. Superb little canyon, short but sweet. Spectacular basalt column formations, a couple of Black Snakes, plenty of bird life and great views of the harsh but beautiful landscape. A terrific spring day, sun and blue skies all day with a slight breeze. The water was not as cold as I expected but the climb out was a bit hairy, extremely loose soil and rocks and very steep.
It is possible to access the slot and down-climb all the way to the huge chockstone or you can abseil in from various points left or right above the slot. I scrambled in and down-climbed as far as I could and did the three abseils from the chockstone on; it is possible to exit to the right and back up to the ridge from all three abseil points. - |

Penrose gully East tributary Newnes State Forest Garden of Stone N.P. 11-8-2007
A great deal of fun can be had negotiating this short and dry, but very narrow canyon. A beautiful spring day, a fun canyon and a cool pleasurable walk out through a densely vegetated gully hosting a variety of Ferns and Cycads. After exiting the gully it is a stroll through some of the century old refinery ruins back to camp.
Easy access from the barrier on the Old Coach Road, only three abseils, the last being the max is just under 30m from the anchor. - |
