* Pewter is an alloy consisting mostly of tin
* Pewter dates to Roman days when only the rich owned it
* After 1800 antimony was added and lead was excluded
* Lead causes a grayish-black patina
* Modern pewter contains no lead
* Pewterers were mainly in NE United States
* Colonial and Federal eras: Almost every city & most rural areas had pewterers but most of them worked in cities
* Late 18th century added antimony - pewter was called Britannia metal
* By the Civil War, Britannia metal was electroplated, but pewter lost its market in favor of German silver
* Spoons and Plates: most common form made by American pewterers
* American pewter is plain with the exception of porringer handles
* More than 177,000 pounds sterling of finished pewter was sent to America before the Revolution
* Modern pewter has 3 finishes: polished, satin and oxidized
* Early pewter was cast in molds
* Modern pewter is usually hammered
