52 FF PW
This is pictures of my 1952 FFPW and will be updated as much as possible during its restoration etc. The color I have picked to paint it is Dodge Truck Rio Maroon and Black fenders & running boards. This truck is getting helitool kits(disc brakes, power steering & hanging pedals), new 4.89 gears with a 1210 lock-right in the rear end, Mar-K white oak bed wood with stainless steel strips, GM one wire Alternator 12 volt conversion, poly 318 V8 with headers with a rebuilt NP435 dual PTO trans and custom flowmaster 50 series exhaust, 3/4 ton centered rear axle housing, all new interior, new tires and lots of NOS parts. I will be putting NDT tires on for now. Every nut and bolt has been taken off(cleaned or replaced)

Great restoration job and nice web page!! I'm in the process of restoring a 1950 PW. I'm going almost stock, except for 12 volt alt. spin on filter, split manifold and two barrel intake/carb. Painting it deep gray with black fenders etc. I have a later project like your's,a WM 300 with a 360 V-8. If needed be can I pick your brain from time to time ? Thanks Mark

Great!  Really enjoyed the photos. Thanks for the info on the color for the engine and transmission.  I haven't taken mine down quite as far, but I share your enthusisam for the truck.  Mine is at the at Portland spring as we speak.

I love the first photo, just a classic shot of a forgotten legend, about to be rescued.  Looks forlorn and sad, but 'we' (Power Wagon nuts!) can see the potential just sitting there!!!!  Great find!  I'll keep looking...

here she sits in the tall grass hidden by willows and the tires flat and sunk in almost to the running boards. No rust as the truck spent spent 8 months of the year frozen at 7,000 ft elevation haha

I fixed the roof dent already. The tailgate I think I wont though. The major problem with the bed is the rear stakehole/supports.

nice looking fish plate added after a major accident to the drivers side front at one time. The frame isn't cracked/broken but is bent downward and I will get it straightened out correctly after removing the plate.

a worn out MU2 winch, we can rebuild it we have the technology

Enlarge photo 26

winchparts
winch drum and main housing all cleaned up ready for paint after a good glass beading and some primer, I still have to remove the center shaft as of yet.

Enlarge photo 27
27
winchparts1
almost all the rest of the winch parts, some good, some are badly worn. I did a quick calculation of parts needed and the bill for parts will be $600 plus shipping from VPW ouchers!!!!!! I also will need the front split bumpers as well for another $375 plus shipping from Dennis Sherman at power wagons plus

Enlarge photo 28
28
winchpaint
I got all of it painted except 2 parts which are still in primer. New seals, bearings and bronze bushings which all 3 were in pretty bad shape to say the least.

not too bad alot of dirt/grease and surface rust, which is to be expected. Nice rusted out exhaust pipe as well.

FF Radiator
beat up 50 year old radiator, on its way to be recored. Gotta love having a tranny place, a radiator place and a windshield/glass place all in the same building complex. I am able to do all the other work except engine machining.

a primed/prepped tail light housing and the "dodge" red glass lens. Also the stainless cowl light bezels highly polished along with a stainless gas cap. In the mix also is my restored black shifter ball.

A finished taillight ready for wiring and a bulb. I have a matching one for the passenger side as well

Enlarge photo 48

highly polished stainless steel outside door handles. I think one has a little dink I still need to polish out.

Enlarge photo 49

my new ebay dome light. I polished and cleaned up the switch and bulb holder along with the glass lens. I'll media blast lightly the rest of the parts then prime and paint them.

a pile of sheetmetal etc ready to be taken to the media blaster. Also in the foreground(red thing) is my newly rebuilt 318 poly for my V8 conversion I am going to do. I will assemble the rest of the parts on it when I get the rest needed from Brittncool.

I finally figured put how to get the black cardboard out. I can now get the springs cleaned and repainted and then replace the black cardboard.

Enlarge photo 61
61
seatsprings2
Here is another view. I contemplated not doing it but in my opinion if you aren't going to do it right then don't do it(being a restoration) don't do it at all!! I've torn into this truck and taken off every nut and bolt I can find (cleaned or replaced where needed) no need to cut corners now.

Enlarge photo 62
62
seatcardboard
here is a before and after shot of the seat bottom "cardboard" looking at it you can tell why I am replacing it!!! This was a job in itself to get out whole and then make a new one. Thanks Vaughn for the helpful hints. As soo as the seat frames are cleaned up more and repainted black I will slip this back in and then reupholster it all.

Enlarge photo 63
63
windowframe
media blasted windshield frame, ready for paint and primer and some tinted flat glass. I'll have to drill out a couple screws which is typical as they often rust and break when taking this thing apart. Good news is they were the only thing rusted.

Enlarge photo 64

Here is the license plate I will be using on the truck. I will send it off to be repainted.

NOS wing window retainer(actually I have two of them) both RH sides. One is better than the other as one needs repainting. I needed a drivers side and converted one of the passenger sides to a driver by drilling out the rivets holding the stainless vent wing knob locker and reversing it and riveting it back on looks great and you would never know looking at it!!

Enlarge photo 86

I'm not ready to close it all up, I still need to install the 1957 Plymouth Fury cam I bought NOS and the adjustable rocker arms I bought for it. The Fury cam has a little more lobe on it which will make the custom made headers sound real good!!!

this is the cab on "skates" I made a platform for ease of moving it from point A to B and to keep it a bit off the ground as well Still needs some work and it is slow going but should be ready for sealer and any other body work before several coats of sanding and priming to smooth all the way out.

wiringharness
Got my wiring harness today from Vintage Wiring of Maine (207)465-3431 Joe Hall and looks to be very high quality and all the bags are labelled so should not be too hard to install also has instructions and how to polarize. These are cloth covered as well. I can't wait to install it and give a review on how it went. Price was $487 with the shipping.

Enlarge photo 113
113
radside
here is the inside part of the radiator shroud side pieces in the rio maroon. I will paint the front side tomorrow after this sets up. It has 4 coats on it and I now see why they used black primer it takes 4 coats to not get any runs and to cover everything so that no light colored primer shows through. The paint actually has a certain transparency to it. I'm sure it would be a deeper color if the primer or base coat was black but too far into it to change now, I kinda like it!

Enlarge photo 114
114
radgrill
Here is the radiator grill and little front side pieces. I see a ton of trucks with the grill black which on my truck it was body color so that is how I am doing it and I think it is the correct way. Again just the backsides are painted at this time.

Here is the glovebox door painted!!! Looking good I must say!!! Actually it will get one more coat this evening.

Enlarge photo 116

jackstands
well I got a real lawn ornament now haha got it up on jack stands finally with the tires off. I'm ready to go get the tires dismounted and the rims cleaned up and painted for the new 900X16 NST's it will be riding on. Also note the rear part of the black car it is a 1962 Chrysler 300H we are working on!!! Yup Judd we snuck it out from Nebraska!!!

Enlarge photo 123
123
jackstands2
another view of my lawn ornament!! I still have to get the bed off and fix that fender. The bed still has a bolt or 2 on it somewhere holding it down.

Enlarge photo 124
124
axle knuckle housing
this is the drivers side knuckle housing it is pretty chewed up inside. The bearings were shot, one totaly destroyed. Those are chisel marks those marks are from the last knuckle housing rebuild obviously not done right. I have an inclination either the spider gears or the axle is broken on the passenger we shall see soon!!! are we having fun yet??? OH YEAH!!!!!!!

Enlarge photo 125
125
knucklebearing
This is what is left of the lower knuckle bearing, it totally fell apart inside the housing and you can see where the roller bearing cage wore into the race. I was going to replace the bearings anyways but be a note to all putting a FFPW back on the road please check your bearings!!!!

Enlarge photo 126
126

Now this is what a bearing & race is supposed to look like, this is the replacement I will install. Much better as compared to the other

Enlarge photo 127
127
brokenaxle
well I was correct in assuming the passenger side axle was broken when I moved the truck I could here some metal flopping inside the axle housing on the passenger side and here it is!!! Looks like it has been run awhile broken too.

Enlarge photo 128
128
axleshafts
here is the 2 pieces side by side the smaller piece totally shredded the oilite brass bushing/bearing inside the axle housing and destroyed the inside of the spindle as well slopping arounding there

got the rear differential housing out today, the 5.83 gears are in great shape!!! too bad I'm replacing them with 4.89's this week.

axlehousing
here is the original FFPW axle housing. I slid the axles back in to keep them from getting knocked over etc. I am replacing the axle housing with a centered one from a 3/4 ton Dodge military truck. This will look better and put less strain on the transfer case especially with higher speeds the truck will be capable of.

Enlarge photo 132
132
axlehousing2
and here is the centered axle housing I got from Blake Hobi. This should do the job, I'll be picking it up soon when we go on a parts run across WA and OR.

Enlarge photo 133

Enlarge photo 134

well got the whole axle housing etc out today, just a few knick knacks to finish disassembly of the front

Enlarge photo 135

gettin pretty nekkid looking now almost there and we start rebuilding and putting back together full time and no more nasty greasy work!!!

Enlarge photo 136
136
tailgate1x
here is the best pic I can get of the tailgate until it is on the truck which is still a while away at this time. Unfortunately after painting and getting it handpainted D-O-D-G-E in silver I will have to find another tailgate to fit my newly found excellent shape second series bedsides.

Enlarge photo 137
137
tailgate
All cleaned up ready for some minor ding repair and off for some primer and paint after a seal coat. Very nice and straight as an arrow tailgate with no rust from Nevada. Since I went to the correct type bed I will get to paint and have this one hand painted D-O-D-G-E as well with silver. Also came with some excellent tailgate hinges.

Enlarge photo 138

factoryheaders
Here is my factory headers for my Poly 318, This engine is going to ROAR when I bolt these on along with the Flowmaster exhaust!!!

Enlarge photo 139
139
poly headers
I test fitted the headers they are a perfect match and with these hugging the block it will eleviate any fitment problems. I will take them back off and have them repainted or ceramic coated.

Enlarge photo 140
140
driveshaftsetc
well got them painted I should have put the new u-joints on first but oh well. They came out real nice in my opinion

Enlarge photo 141
141
steeringknuckles
Got these painted as well, what a job to get them apart and then cleaned(greasy!!!). I had to mark them so as not to get mixed up as per the factory manual they are machined to fit to each other and can't be swapped/mixed for proper fitment and seal.

Enlarge photo 142
142
hubassembly
well got the new studs and lug nuts on the hub along with the disc brake rotor. I also put a set of lockers not the best of brands but will work for now.

Enlarge photo 143
143
radcap
I got my radiator cap from VPW and it was painted in red oxide primer. I decided to wire wheel the primer off and found some shiny steel/stainless steel under it. I put it on the buffing wheel with some jewelers rouge and WOW it came out impressive!!

Enlarge photo 144
144
seatback
Got the seat back all cleaned up and I used POR-15 to coat it. I used my HVLP spray gun. It came out great.
I have the padding on but need to make some adjustments WOW that is a job to try and get even and straight!! ****side note I have given up trying to get it to look right and be right and will take the frames with the padding and new covering to a professional and fork out the $$ to have it done correctly. Hog rings and getting the padding on there is frustrating!!

rearleafs
Here is my rear leaf springs. Actually in pretty good shape just a tad dirty. I got a leaf spring rebuild kit from VPW with new brass bushings, new cam lock bolts and a new center bolt that pulls and holds them together. Pretty slick deal and you will need a press to put the brass bushings in with. I used a "metric" socket to press the bushing out with as it makes no difference if it cracks, there will be NO metric nuts/bolts on this rig!!

Here is the rear leaf springs taken apart. Pretty cruddy and dirty. They are in good shape tho and just need cleaning, new bolts and bushing with new cam lock pins.

rearleafs1
I have been contemplating on what type of paint to use on these when I took them apart and cleaned them up. I decided on black POR-15. I didn't want the paint to crack but I wanted them to be protected and not get the typical rust bleeding out from between the leafs. This should do the trick in my opinion and easy to touch up if necessary. WOW these things are heavy when assembled!!! As you can see in the top right corner the fronts are almost ready they are assembled just need the leaf bolts to be put on that hold them in alignment.

Enlarge photo 150

Here is 3 out of the 4 sets of leaf springs repainted with new bushings and new bolts. WOW these things are heavy!!! I can't wait to get them reinstalled on the frame once it is cleaned up and painted as well.

splitring
Got my NOS split rings painted. They are not painted silver in color, I found a cadmium spray paint which was alot easier to do than send all 5 of them out to be cad plated.

Enlarge photo 152
152
rims
Just got the rims back. They dismounted the tires without removing the split rings from the back side. The rims are in good shape just need cleaned up and repainted.

Enlarge photo 153

rims1
Here are the rims after I took the split rings off. What a job as I had no idea how to do it. I figured it out though. The inside of them say GoodYear LTS made in the USA. Also 3 are date coded 10-52 and 2 are date coded 3-52 Which matches the year of my truck. The 3 10-52's are from a truck I bought off of Jonas Smith.

All media blasted and ready for paint. I should have them done in a few days and ready for the tires to be mounted.

Here are my new tires for the truck. I also got the tubes and flaps. I have spent too much $$ on the truck and will have to use these for the time being. They will still look great on the truck.

Tires
Got my rims and tires back finally. Took a few days to get the flaps in. They did however manage to chip the new paint in a couple places. I will be able to touch them up and he knocked some $$$ off of the bill. They look great!!! I can't wait to put them on.

Enlarge photo 158
158
hoodsides
I dismantled the hood to get it perfect. I will have to put a new hood lock on the one side and have a NOS one. Also installing a new rod for each side for the small flap and a new hinge from VPW for the middle center/top. The rest of the hood locks will be taken off as well to get under them cleaned and then reriveted back on.

I got my newly manufactured split fron bumper for the MU2 winch today. It looks great and quality is nice as well. This came from Power Wagon Plus(Dennis Sherman)508-735-2927 in Grafton, Ma. I will have to drill the mounting holes but no big deal.

looking at some forgotten pics I ran across this one. Been over a year now. The 58 Desoto is in Australia and the Power Wagon is in pieces being restored. Also from the trailer to past where the dumpster is all full of Dodge trucks now. The fleet has changed and grown!!

doorstuff
Got the window regulators and the door lock links etc all cleaned up. I shot them with cad spray and the parts that get auto paint will get it as I masked them off. I have decided to install the door guts and then seal them in plastic to prevent overspray. Too much work involved and too high of a risk to scratch the paint installing these items.

Enlarge photo 180

bedside panel
Just to show I am not hiding anything you will note there is body filler on this bed side. There was a major pooch and stretching where the spare tire mount goes. I worked it and shrank it back to shape as close to original as a man can get. I have a ton of hours in hammer and dolly work on this and it needed a skim coat to finish out any slight waviness. This side is looking good and ready for primer and some block sanding, the other side will take quite a bit more work it got tweaked pretty bad in the middle by the center stake pocket hole.
I am not against body filler unless it is over 1/16th inch thick or used to fill a rust hole.
All those pretty vehicles you see at the shows have had this done to them somewhere or all over.
I would dread doing a set of WDX bedsides with those flat panels.

well it's been a little over a year since I tore the "Jungle Truck" down for a resto. I am finally getting some paint on the frame!!! wo hoooooo It should go pretty quick now as most of the parts are redone and repainted ready to be put on. I had the frame straightened and it set me back $300 but it is good as new now.

here is a close up shot looking pretty good about 75% painted in the first coat. I am using POR15 Chassis Cote glossy black which is UV resilient and should keep it's shine but is not as shiny as the regular POR15. Those new Dennis Sherman @ Power Wagon Plus winch extensions are begging to be put on!!!!!!

got the front axle housing on with the leaf springs. I forgot to order a oil seal retainer for the steering knuckle so I'm on hold for a few days. All new bearings and seals will be used!! Most of them were torn to hell anyways. Also awaiting the differentials to come back with the new 4.89 gears in them before I can put the axles in and the disk brakes on.

I temprarily placed the radiator yoke on for some measurements for the engine. It is going pretty fast now, really nice to work with clean and good nuts and bolts. Also have discovered the frame is still a tad out of whack and will need it to be a rolling chassis so I can take it back for a final tweaking. The drivers side front frame rail still has a slight bend down. Not noticeable until I placed the winch extensions on it.

In my spare time I have begun to color sand and buff the cab. Buffing the paint back to a shine is the easy part. The hours and hours of careful wet sanding takes it toll as it gets boring and tiring.
