Freckles
Freckles came from the streets of as small town in east Texas. A good Samaritan took her in and contacted Ratbone Rescues to help save her. On June 19th she made it to her foster mom in Arizona, who promptly took her to the vet. The vet did a preliminary exam and found poor Freckles had indeed been living a hard life. Along with being very skinny and dehydrated, Freckles came up positive for heartworms and tape worms. She had a large raw and painful area on her back which was infected and infested with fleas, and her body’s reaction was making her itch all over. The vet examined Freckles' teeth and found she had ground down her bottom front teeth all the way to the gums, and her upper front teeth were broken. This could have been from trying to chew her way out of something or chewing on something incessantly. Freckles also looks like she's already had some puppies in her young life. The vet decided before doing any more tests (to see if there are more things wrong) that we should go ahead and try and treat the most dire health issues first with poor Freckles.
Freckles is going to need 6 weeks of treatment on a very harsh medication for Heartworms where she will have to be confined with no excitement or play. This is to protect her heart while the heartworms die off from the painful treatment. She needs x-rays as part of this to see how large her heart is and what damage has been done. She will also be treated for her infections, fleas and tape worms. When she has recovered from the Heartworm treatment, Freckles will need an extensive dental to remove her upper and lower front teeth so she can have relief from the raw nerves exposed from the damage. The extimated cost of all these treatments and procedures is $900.
Freckles is a very sweet and pretty little girl and obviously - she’s a fighter. She is only about 2 years old. With some help, Freckles should pull though this and become a wonderful companion for someone. She is fostering in Gilbert, AZ. |
