BORN OCTOBER 4, 2009 ENVY X PAN
5 days before Due Date
Envy doesn’t feel confident to jump on the bed which I oblige her and lift her to the bed. Actually I prefer to lift her. And help her down in the mornings. She snuggles next to me and stretches out atop the covers. Her sides are dancing as little bodies push against her skin. That one must be a quarterback. That one a disco queen. Then it hits me to gather my stethoscope and listen to what is happening inside. Envy’s heartbeat is wonderfully strong and has a rhythm that is soothing. I hear interesting stomach sounds. Then I hear them…..the wee little heartbeats of pups.

The long trek to Shreveport is heavy on my heart. I must leave earlier than planned. I will leave Saturday instead of Sunday.

It’s a beautiful day. The sky is blue with nary a cloud and the temps are 65ish. I stop to visit my beautiful granddaughter and let her see Bailey and Envy before we hit the road long term. Granddaughter Devin wants to show me her pumpkin patch that’s neatly arranged on the front porch. Devin shares pre Halloween candy with me. Bailey is searching for a mouse…if there’s hay bales he thinks there’s going to be a mouse nearby. Go figure. After a cup of coffee it’s time to load the dogs and head south. Buzzing with caffeine, sugar and kisses from Devin, I will drive until dusk. We stop in Meridian, MS to stay the night and let the mother-to-be and this ole lady’s body get a good night’s rest. Envy is in her pajamas. I lift her to the bed and under the covers she goes. Night Envy. Night Bailey.
October 4, 2009
Envy, Bailey and I awake and rise to the pitter patter of rain. Ugh. Van loaded ready to roll early. Five more hours to destination. I say my Road Prayer. Envy grows restless and is shifting positions on her special-made fluffy bed. Her eyes tell me she’s tired. Her eyes tell me something else as well.
The drive becomes longer than five hours. There are accidents on the road which delay us. We finally arrive in Shreveport. Still pouring rain. There is flooding. I will be so glad to land and park this white bird (van). Bill is waiting in the parking lot with an umbrella. Such a gentleman. Wisk the dogs to the apartment but allow them their pit stops. Up the stairs we go, inside now, all of us are soaked.
The dogs are inquisitive. New diggs. Sniff. Sniff. Ok, this smells familiar….like home. Envy eyeballs the space under the couch. Then she disappears into the guest room. I grab a towel to dry her, but can’t find her. Where’d she go? Envy where are you? Bailey sits by the bed then sticks his nose under the bedskirt. Thanks Baybay. Down on hands and knees I peek under the bed. There she is ….. she won’t come out. Uh oh.
I hesitate to ask Bill to go back to the car and get my doctoring bag, crate and other neccessities, but feel it’s important to get them. I pull Envy from underneath the bed and wrap her shivering body in a towel. My rain drenched husband brings all the essentials from the van. I dry the crate and line it with a warm towel. Envy enters the crate and begins to rearrange the décor. Within 5 minutes her water breaks!
The babies were born Sunday, October 4, 2009. When the sixth baby, a boy, was born I showed Bill that he had a number “7” on his chest. Bill stoically said, “then she’s not done, there’s another one.” Darn if he wasn’t right….the seventh baby was born at 7:45 Sunday evening.
Reading this you may wonder why take a expectant mommy on the road. Things in my life happen in clusters. Part of this cluster is my husband has a surgery scheduled this week and I vowed to be by his side come “heck or high water”…. Both occurred.
Let’s see….7 babies, one marked with a 7 on his chest…..seven little blessings. The theme for this litter shall be 7th HEAVEN. In the TV series each episode deals with a moral lesson or controversial theme that the family handles either directly or indirectly. 7th Heaven was the most watched TV series ever on the WB.
The central characters are the Reverend Eric Camden (Stephen Collins), his wife Annie (Catherine Hicks), and their seven children: Matt (Barry Watson]), Mary (Jessica Biel), Lucy (Beverley Mitchell), Simon (David Gallagher), Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) and the twins, David (Lorenzo Brino) and Sam (Nikolas Brino).
