That evening, the RREC group got together with the group from the 20-Ghost Club who were nearing the end of their celebration of the Alpine, a nearly exact re-enactment of the original route. 2442 and I had participated in a similar event in 2003, so decided to join the RREC this year. We were supposed to drive our cars over to the nearly next door hotel, then walk back to change into “smart casual” clothing for the evening’s festivities, sponsored by Rolls-Royce. The press was in attendance, and yet again, they were interested in a woman driving one of these old cars. I always try to turn to subject from me into the idea of the reliability of a Silver Ghost, sometimes even saying “It’s so straightforward, even a girl can do it.” Later, Georgina Wood, of the P & A Wood family, who was driving the Wood’s Silver Ghost, told me she was very glad when I arrived, and she could be relieved from answering all of the same questions.

Monday 24 June. The 163 miles planned turned into 250. Canazei to Velden, Austria Seehotel Europa.
The Pordoi Pass was closed due to snow – except to two cars that had left too early to hear the news. Alternate directions were a little vague. A cultural difference in describing where a road would occur sent us quite a ways farther on the detour, then back.

Rain in the morning turned to snow; or the other way around; then back again. I did what I dislike and put the hood up. Probably a good idea, but it impedes vision considerably.

Tuesday 25 June. 176 miles into Slovenia, up the Loibl Pass and back to Velden.

The day was organized by Igor Buser and his friends who had done the necessary work to clear the rocks and debris from the Loibl Pass so that both groups could have our runs to the top. I had met Igor and his daughter 10 years ago under similar circumstances. It was a pleasure to see both of them again as well as some of the others who had helped both times.
If you enjoy beautiful, rugged mountain scenery, and pursuing outdoor activities of any sort, go to Slovenia. Newly part of the EU, they are eager for visitors from all over. I hope to return.

In the town of Kobarid for a welcome and refreshments. The statue in the background memorializes Simon Gregorčič, the revered national poet who had predicted the conflagration of World War I many years before. We were each given an appropriate memento.
