Thailand: Payap University in Chiang Mai
Payap University, located in Chiang Mai, was founded by the Church of Christ in Thailand, the largest and strongest Protestant church in Thailand and the primary companion of the ELCA in Thailand. Within the university structure is McGilvary School of Theology, the theological training center for the CCT.

Payap University is the premier Protestant Christian University in Thailand. It was founded by the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT) in 1974 in Chiang Mai (the second largest city in Thailand, located in the northern part of the country). Payap now has an undergraduate enrollment of more than 7,000 students, a faculty of 460, and a graduate enrollment of 500. Payap works closely with the CCT and local churches to serve the needs of CCT churches and schools, especially in training Christian administrators and church musicians. Edit

Payap's two libraries house over 140,000 volumes, and 2,100 audiovisual forms, and subscribe to 600 periodicals and journals. The university's Institute of Religion, Culture and Peace has become a resource for people of different faiths and backgrounds to meet and discuss ideologies and examine proposals for living in peace. Payap is a Liberal Arts and Pre-Professional School offering 22 Thai language undergraduate degrees in 12 departments (faculties), 5 Master’s degree programs (in Thai) and 4 International Masters degree programs (in English). Students come from all provinces in Thailand. 95% of the students are Buddhist, 4% are Christian, and 1% are Muslim.  Payap has a truly international student body, with nearly 30 countries represented in the student body, including the United States, China, Myanmar, France, Germany, Mexico, Japan, Pakistan, India. representing 16 National Councils and over 100 churches/denominations in

Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand.

Dr. Prawate KHID-ARN, Church of Christ in Thailand, is the General Secretary of the Christian Conference of Asia. During May of 2008, Dr. Prawate and his staff were busy communicating with the Myanmar Council of Churches, and mobilizing relief aid to cyclone victims from the churches in Asia. The ELCA participates in CCA meetings and assemblies in the region and provides some financial support. Edit

Sawai Chinnawong, of Payap University, Chiang Mai, Thailand, is a distinguished artist known for portraying Christianity through a Thai graphic idiom. Sawai is an ethnic Mon whose Buddhist ancestors migrated to Thailand from Myanmar. His drawings and paintings, inspired by traditional art from central Thailand, reflect a deep Christian faith."
