ELCA World Hunger funds have been provided to Luzhou Church (Sichuan Province), China, to meet the needs of those living in poverty in the area.

The village of Tubida has benefited in many ways: a new road and clean drinking water.

Mayor Yao explains to Peter Shen, ELCA advisor in China, how the well works. The well tube goes down 60 feet and water is pumped up with a 300 watt pump and piped into the house. There is plenty of water for the rice fields, but none is safe for drinking.

Villagers established a cooperative, through which they are planting entire new orchards of lychee trees.

Lychee fruit from Tubida are uniquely larger and have a red outer shell (normally brown). These lechees were in high regard by the Tang Dynasty court and are still in high demand.
