Just beyond the trail junction to Wilber Lake the trail steepens.  Here is Fred on a set of "Sierra Stairs", where the CCC trail crews  built trails to last.  The stairs are hard to go up or down and are not kind to old knees!

Finally we get to the top (about 10500') - it seemed like  a much longer climb than I thought it would be- about a 1000 ft. climb from Grassy Lake..

Fred on wey down to Squaw Lake. Just before we got to Sqaw Lake, we saw a guy who looked just like Shelby from a distance and we were wondering how he got ahead of us.  He had the same clothes as Shelby did but when he got close we saw it wasn't.  He and two others were "speed" hiking from Yosemite to Mt Whitney, but after a couple of 35 mile days they had fallen off the pace and were now headed for Lake Edison to bail out.  The last of the three said he had gone to school at UW.

View down valley at Squaw Lake.  Fred and I waited here for Roger to get back from his side trip to Silver Pass.    While we were waiting, an old codger came up the trail and made fun of our new Kelty Packs.  He was a "Go-Lite" hiker - his pack looked like a laundry sack with sewn on straps.  But he was moving fast and was soon on his way.
