enlarge 155KB, 568x800 4 sierra04d4 003b Just beyond the trail junction to Wilber Lake the trail steepens. Here is Fred on a set of "Sierra Stairs", where the CCC trail crews built trails to last. The stairs are hard to go up or down and are not kind to old knees!
enlarge 149KB, 568x800 5 sierra04d4 004b Climbing up you get this peekaboo view of Grassy Lake through the trees.

enlarge 150KB, 605x800 8 sierra04d4 007b Finally we get to the top (about 10500') - it seemed like a much longer climb than I thought it would be- about a 1000 ft. climb from Grassy Lake..

enlarge 129KB, 800x568 18 sierra04d4 017b Beautiful Lake of the Lone Indian - I've been fascinated by that name on the map and in the guide books for about 40 years, an now I have been there!

enlarge 155KB, 568x800 56 sierra04d4 057b Fred on wey down to Squaw Lake. Just before we got to Sqaw Lake, we saw a guy who looked just like Shelby from a distance and we were wondering how he got ahead of us. He had the same clothes as Shelby did but when he got close we saw it wasn't. He and two others were "speed" hiking from Yosemite to Mt Whitney, but after a couple of 35 mile days they had fallen off the pace and were now headed for Lake Edison to bail out. The last of the three said he had gone to school at UW.
enlarge 108KB, 800x568 57 sierra04d4 056b View down valley at Squaw Lake. Fred and I waited here for Roger to get back from his side trip to Silver Pass. While we were waiting, an old codger came up the trail and made fun of our new Kelty Packs. He was a "Go-Lite" hiker - his pack looked like a laundry sack with sewn on straps. But he was moving fast and was soon on his way.
enlarge 137KB, 800x568 58 sierra04d4 058b As we were waiting, Buckwheat joined us. We had planned to camp at Squaw Lake but it was just to barren - no fish in the lake either. We enjoyed the late afternoon sun as we waited for Roger.
