1. York Village Discovery  (Updated, Apr 2007)
This Historic village was founded in 1819 and was one of the oldest registered villages in the former colony. Its attractions include:
An old community center built in the 1800's housing the list of names of the leading figures if the village.

There is a herse that was used for all village burials housed in the rear of the District Council.

The bell that was used during the colonial times still stands proudly in the middle of the village.

The caves in York are reported to be hundreds of years old with stories of them acting as a refuge from slave captors. It is reported to run for miles, ending at the neighbouring village of Tokeh. It was also used to supply fresh water.

The Kings Yard- This old guest house was built by the First Prime Minister of Sierra Leone (along with the Government Hospital) prior to Independence. It is believed that the King's Yard was constructed to house visiting dignitaries.

2. Vegetation and Flora  (updated, Apr 2007)
Sierra Leone is blessed with rich vegetation and sustainable fruits and vegetables throughout the country. We have an array of unique flora that you can see and touch and many time eat (within season).

We have a horticultural specialist on staff that will provide you with a thorough insight into the botanical abundance.

If this is not enough, schedule a tour of a private garden (floral extraveganza) within reach of most hotel locations.

3. National Railway Collection    (April 2007)
Another rediscovered treasure for Africa and heritage of Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone National Government Railway was one of the first constructed in West Africa to link the rich agricultural hinterlands in the British protectorate. Work began in 1896 and a small stretch was open to traffic on May 1, 1899. By 1908 the tracks ran East as far as Pendembu some 277miles from Freetown and close to the Liberian and Guinean boundaries.

Recently, a team of British train enthusiasts rescued many of the locomotives locked away in a suburban warehouse.

Although the chimpanze population in Sierra Leone has been diminishing since 1988 when Mr Bala Amarasekeran had the idea of creating a sanctuary there is hope in the air--A visit to the sanctuary is a must.

The sanctuary was set up in 1995, and is commited to the rescue and rehabilitation of oprhaned and abandoned chimpanzees. High in the hills of the Western Forest, the chimps enjoy a semi-wild life within the 100 acre reserve.

Hear fond stories about BRUNO one of the first chimps nursed to full recovery and JULIE his companion. The Sanctuary continues to receive support from internationally recognized organizations such as WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals)and volunteer internships from graduate students from as far as Japan.
