Thailand Our trip to Thailand consisted of visiting Bangkok and Chiang Mai - and the areas surrounding them. Temples, elephant rides and searingly hot (read spicy) food were the highlights.  Traffic, pollution and oppressive heat were the downside.  The physical landscape (remember, we visited no beaches) underwhelmed us; the man-made landscape, though, stunned us. Grand Palace, Bangkok Construction on the Grand Palace complex began in 1780's.  There are now over 100 buildings contained within the palace walls. Statue - Grand Palace One of the statues brought from China that were used as ballasts on ships. Phra Sri Ratana Chedi Chedi is the Thai term for Indian stupa.  These monuments hold relics of Buddha. Grand Palace ornaments Grand Palace Grand Palace Wat Po The 150-foot reclining Buddha of gilded plaster and brick fills a large area of the wat(temple). Wat Po Visitors drop coins into the 108 bronze bowls - corresponding to the 108 auspicious characteristics of the Buddha - for good luck. Northern Thailand Elephant Nature Park - Chiang Mai Elephant feeding time Elephants perform Bath time Elephant waiting Crossing a river Reach out and touch someone Ayutthaya Siam's ancient captial city until the Burmese conquered it in 1767.  They destroyed much of the city.  All that remains are these structures.
