This may be an apartment house on Avenue Jean Jaures. This is the end of the building. It stretches for about a block and is very narrow.
TGV on the move in Paris.
Just another arch in Paris. Porte St-Martin at the intersection of Bolevard St-Martin and Rue Saint-Martin.
Typical Paris street scene.
Just another Paris street.
Arts et Metiers Metro station showing above ground entrance, transportation map and neighborhood map. On the left is an electronic message board that displays all sorts of public messages. They are everywhere in Paris and on the highways. The guy is riding a Velib bike. They have thousands of these rental bikes all over the city.
Notre Dame.
Paris City Hall or Hotel De Ville with display for Rugby World Cup. There was astroturf on the plaza with this giant LCD screen showing live Rugby action cable news programs.
Hotel De Ville de Paris. Some town hall, eh? There are 146 statues of historical figures.
Cheryl getting in the act in front of Le Bazar de L'Hotel-de-Ville at 55 Rue de la Verrerie, a department store.
Smart car with a wrap for the Rugby World Cup. There is real astroturf on the roof.

Fuel barge on Seine. Most bulk materials are handled on the river in Paris as heavy trucks are not allowed on the streets.
Pont d'Arcole with Hotel Dieu in background.
Site seeing boat or Bateaux-Mouches on Seine. These are very popular and are a great way to tour the river.
Hotel De Ville
This is a Batobus. For 11 euros you can hop on and off these all day and night at several places along the Sceine. In good weather it is a very pleasurable way to get to all the major sites in the city.

Building at corner of Quai des Orfevres and Rue de Harlay.
Lion in front of Palais de Justice.
Work on Palais de Justice. The staging is covered over by a fake exterior. The construction fence is also decorated to look like a stone wall. This is Paris after all. Aesthetics counts!
Former Samaritaine department store on Quai de Louvre with Pont Neuf in foreground. Pont Neuf is the oldest bridge over the Seine. The building was closed in 2005 because it is a fire trap. It may not open until 2011.
Building along Quai de la Megisserie. The traffic on the lower level is on Voie Georges Pompidou. There are parkways along much of the Seine through Paris.
Pont au Change. Notice the Nepolionic emblems. In the background is Theater de la Ville and the tower is Tour St-Jacques undergoing a renovation with hidden staging.
View from Mary's apartment.
Building at Place de Bichie and Rue Jomard.
Fire equipment on Sunday display along the Canal St-Martin on the Quai de L'Oise.
Open air food market at Quai de L'Oise and Place de Joinville. Parisians shop for food on a daily basis. There are several markets like this throughout the city. Some are open only one day a week. Others are open week ends only and a few are daily. It is a giant scrum with no room to move but the products are fresh, hi quality, come from around the world and you cannot beat the prices. They make Blackstone Street in Boston look like a dumpster.
The Sunday market at Quai de L'Oise and Place de Joinville.
In Normandy along the A13 at a service area. The A13 is like a US interstate highway. Normandy is known for apples so why not an apple orchard at the service area? Nothing like the barren pavement we see at US service areas.
Globalization at work. This is an Esso (Exxon/Mobile) service area. Notice the "On The Run" brand name for the store. Same as the US brand without a French translation. This gives the French fits. Do not confuse this with a US operation. You can get real food here with real coffee. It has all the usuall junk food as well though the junk food is somewhat upscale as that's what European junk food is compared to what is available in the US. Prices were very reasonable and the places are spotless. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked. Filth is not tolerated in these service areas.
The Memorial in Caen. It is a memorial to conflict in the 20th century appropriately located in Caen which was leveled by British forces trying to break out of the Normandy beachheads in 1944. This place is beyond explanation. www.memorial-caen.fr
Sculpture of a revolver with a twisted barrel by Karl Fredrik Reutersward. There is another version of this at the United Nations Building in New York City.
This is a full scale replica of a Hurricane in the entrance hall of The Memorial.
Not sure what to make of this just outside of Caen.. It is obviously used to support various antennae arrays as well as an enclosed area on the lowest level. I'm not sure why there are four large decks. It could be a water tower as there are many in Normandy.

This is the top of the path leading down to Omaha Beach from the orientation table at the top of the bluff.
Part way down to the beach looking back up at the orientation table.
Looking East along Omaha Beach.
This is the Easy Red sector of Omaha Beach where elements of E and F Companies of the 16th Regimental Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division as well as elements of E Company, 116th Regimental Combat Team, 29th Infantry Division landed with the first wave. Looking East one can see the WN62 strong point. There was an anti tank gun that could enfilade the beach located there supported by mortar, machine gun and rifle positions along the top of the bluff. The Colleville Draw is further down the beach beyond that. The 1st Infantry Division WWII Memorial is the pointy object to the right.
On the beach looking back up the bluff. The structure at the top is the observation area with the orientation table.
Looking up at the bluff. I've got to say that despite the fact that I was in good shape it was a difficult climb along the path back to the top. This was a huge challenge to troops on D-Day while under fire.
This is the view to the West. Pointe du Hoc is around the point of land seen here. Utah Beach is beyond that. You'll notice the lack of debris in the area. The Europeans gathered untold tons of scrap from all over the war theater in the years following the war. Underwater salvage was also used off all the invasion beaches as the areas were a large source of scrap steel.
Looking out into the English Channel where over 5000 vessels were gathered for the invasion. The tide was low but not at it's lowest point. Beach obstacles forced many landing craft to discharge troops and equipment far from the high tide mark at the bottom of the bluff.
Looking East again from the bench at the foot of the bluff. Troops that made it this far tried to seek cover along this bench but because the Germans could enfilade the entire beach from many defensive positions this bench offered little cover. The troops had to force their way off the beach by climbing the bluff in order to overcome the German defenses.
This is the end of the path from the orientation table at the top of the bluff.
